Doctor resigning after explosive incident

One of our docs has now resigned. He is volatile. I was there for the incident, he had the unit secretary call the assistant manager in the night about some charting she did in one of his charts. He reamed her out in the middle of the night, and then ranted on and off for the rest of the night.

Peer review ensued, I and others were interviewed, and now he is is "pursuing other interests" and we "thank him for his service".

I actually feel a bit sorry. He is a good doc. But, his behavior was getting old. I guess the system works. It's not tolerating this stuff like it used to.

I wish that happened more often! I was fired from an office because of an abusive doc. He would scream at me, call me "stupid", "retarded", or other verbal abuses...even in front of pts. He would sigh dramatically and loudly, and throw things whenever I went to give him information he needed. It escalated to him jamming his finger in my face and screaming at me, and also throwing ink pens at me. I c/o to the clinic administrator, who replied, "Oh that's just how Dr. X is. You gotta deal with it." The doc was a clinic employee, it wasn't "his" clinic. When the administrator didn't do anything, I sent an email to her superior, who took 3 weeks to "look into it" and then so nothing. So I filed a formal c/o with HR. As soon as the clinic administrator found out, she fired me! Yeah, I know I had grounds for a lawsuit, but my state is not a "right to work" state and I was so exhausted by the ordeal I didn't have it in me for a long court mess. I was actually just relieved to be out of it.

Years and years ago I was harassed by a medical director. I knew he had be on the 'watch list' before I started working there. I went to the boss/administrator and filed a complaint. I was told "What do you want us to do? It's hard to find a medical director." Apparently they thought it was far easier to find a nurse to fill my shoes as manager of a very busy sub-acute unit. I didn't want to leave my job and I didn't want to have to hire an attorney. So....I calmly walked up to the medical director and told him his behavior needed to cease immediately or I would be forced to tell my son who would be more than willing to come down and 'take care' of the doctor himself. He became very nervous and never said or did anything inappropriate again. I never did tell him that my son was only 9 years old!

No one should have to put up with this kind of abuse from anyone.

I can't fathom how people regardless of their license status can get away with this sort of thing.

The guy got what he deserved E, maybe it will be his 'moment of insight' and he will see the need to change and do so.

Twenty years ago, the screaming, throwing, and verbal abuse occurred daily somewhere in the hospital. Now I can't remember the last time an MD threw a major fit.

Unfortunately for me, I DO remember those days. I'm still uneasy talking to some of those docs. Like being bitten by a dog as a kid, and being afraid of dogs the rest of your life:nailbiting:

Throwing things? I'd call the cops and press charges for assault. That's just me though, I can understand why others wouldn't. But nobody's throwing things and threatening me without consequences.

I'm thinking it's more of a jab at the offending fit-thrower that can somehow find the strength to rein in their worst behavior when their 'victim' isn't significantly physically smaller.

That's just me, though.

This doctor does seem to hold women in a lesser status. He will only pick on women. He is actually originally from a country not known for women's rights, although we have other doctors from that region who are perfect gentlemen. So, basically I think it boils down to an anger management problem.

So, it's not a 'size' thing, but probably more related to gender, in his case.

I just hate when people act like this at work. The patients can be scary enough, one doesn't need to be scared of your peers too at work.

You are missing the point that some abuse in the health care world is gender based.

The abuser is intolerant and abusive relative to female but not male coworker.

There is a grand history of that in the world, even the USA.
