Hello fellow school nurses! I have been a lurker since I became a school nurse about a year ago! Thank you for all the forums as it helps me to know that I am not alone!
Do most school nurses carry their own professional liability policy? I didn't know what the norm is and get conflicting answers from friends who are RNs but not school nurses. Thoughts? Thanks in advance!

I would recommend it. Your district will defend you if it's in their best interest. I recommend insurance that would cover you if you have to defend yourself from some accusation associated with your job...not simple professional "negligence."

Yes, and also consider joining the teachers' union. The union may help advocate if you have a tussle with a parent.

i have my own malpractice and i'm part of the union. I had a rider on my homeowners insurance too to protect from professional liability, but then changed companies so i don't think i still have it.

Yes I do. I am in a union as well, but carry my own. It is the one thru NASN. I get emails from them, and I paid online, but I never got anything in the mail....does anyone get anything from them in mail saying they cover you? I used to have NSO and got stuff all the time, but switched to go thru the NASN one and havent gotten anything. Just wondering if I am the only one.

Any RN who doesnt have Liability Insurance is at risk, your being a school nurse doesnt change that.. My liability insurance was a measly $100.00 per year and worth every penny for knowing someone has your back. Don't ever expect the BON or your hospital to go to bat for you because they will not despite their statments to the contrary. If it suits their needs they will not hesitate to pitch you right under the bus to be done with it. The legal representation that comes with your insurance are the onlypeople who will have your interests at heart. Don't deny yourself that security.
