Do males ever get to work in hospice?

Published

I think hospice nurses have good jobs and I was hoping to be one some day, but I have never seen a male hospice nurse come to the facility I work in. Have you ever known any male hospice nurses?

Absolutely. We have great skilled, compassionate male nurses in our company. If you think you are interested, start conversations with the hospice nurses that visit your facility and read online posts and blogs from hospice nurses. It is an extremely fulfilling career but a very demanding one as well.

Definitely. They are great and many are well liked by pts/familes and great assets to the team. Note that in inpatient and continuous home care settings, where staff does a lot more hands on care, many hospice pts are older and some older women have issues with personal care from men. Of course that happens anywhere but I've noticed it more in hospice. That said each organization handles that their own way but there are many who love their male nurses and sometimes it's nice for the male pts also. I think i saw more men in hospice than many other specialties.

I have crossed paths with multiple male hospice nurses over my decade-long career in nursing. They have all been seemingly competent in their hospice nursing roles.

I should mention that I've only met a handful of male hospice nurses who did direct continuous care for patients who were actively transitioning. The majority of male hospice nurses in my area have been hospice case management RNs.

I have worked in hospice for ten years. I have known many nurses, both in Continuous Care and Case Management, who are male. They are all awesome. it's all in the message your soul brings to the table.

Yes I was one and now my daughter is.

I have been a hospice nurse for over four years. At the last agency I worked for I was the only male RN Case Manager. Many times male patients are glad they have a male hospice nurse. To add to that, I am a veteran and I often am able to connect with patients because of it. I remember admitting a male patient that preferred a female nurse. His wife called me before I was out of their driveway and said, "You are his nurse, there is no way he is having a female nurse. He was just trying to see what he could get away with." Turns out, we had a great relationship throughout our time together. I have found older female patients to be kinda' funny with male nurses. Some do not want a male at all and many are glad to have the male attention. I have had times when they would not let go of my hand. They're great and I am glad to be there for them.

I am now with another agency, a larger agency, and there is a much higher ratio of male-to-female nurses. It seems like it is just left to chance as to whether there are any male hospice nurses in your area.
