Do I need a Masters in nursing to get a doctorate in nursing?

Published

I will graduate with a BSN in May. I have a Masters in Education already. In order to get a doctorate in nursing, do I need a Masters in nursing first?

Some of my professors right now have their BSN and MSN and then got a PhD in Education. I am wondering, can I not do the corollary: i.e. Bachelors and Masters in Education, bachelors in nursing, skip the Masters in Nursing and then go for the doctorate in nursing?

If you have an insight, please advise.

Thanks.

You will need to address that to the doctoral program you are interested in attending, only they can tell you if they will accept the other masters degree. I have an AS in nursing, a BSN, A MS (anesthesia)- My doctoral program did require me to take a graduate level nursing theory course as a prerequiste but otherwise accepted the MS. Good Luck

you may be able to. i've casually looked at doctoral programs (still in ms program now), and some of the courses taken in the ms program transfer over to the phd or edd. so in my case i would not have to take them. perhaps in your case, you would have to take these (so your doctoral program would be longer than mine). does that make sense?? i looked at teacher's college (at columbia university). if you search teachers college, and look at the course requirements, it may clarify it for you.

Specializes in MICU for 4 years, now PICU for 3 years!.

There are some BSN to Doctorate programs out there... just the other day in my research class, our professor was talking about a conference she had just attended about new requirements for masters/docctorates for the future. One thing she mentioned (I think bc someone asked about it) is that some schools do offer the BSN to doctorate programs. I believe that she did say Ohio State does offer it, and sometimes online colleges do. Maybe you can look for a program like that. Good Luck!

Yes, it is possible but it would depend on the school that you would like to attend. It might though be a better idea to go first for your masters and then for your doctorate. You'll be attending many if not the same classes, and if for some reason you aren't able to finish your PhD in, I believe, the seven years, you'll at least of your master's degree. JMHO.

Our only school in the area does not require anything, other than a school of nursing. They have a program for every extension of your education.
