I've heard of places giving new parents a special dinner. I'm curious what, if anything, different places are doing. We are just now no longer giving away the bags provided by the formula companies, and that leaves us doing nothing special for our new moms. (not that that's so great :-) We (a few of us night shifters) do make specials crib cards for everyone, but we pay for this ourselves, it's not a hospital thing.
What do you guys do??

Our parents have a special steak and shrimp dinner before hey go home. For some reason, we're not giving bags away anymore, either.
We used to do special crib cards which our HUCs made and many paid for out of their own pocket until our boss told us we couldn't do that anymore. Don't ask me why.
If our moms have to stay on LDR because the PP unit is full, they used to get a case of diapers for their inconvenience. (The beds and conveniences are much more comfortable on PP than LDR)

Our parents get nothing but health teaching and help from us. They supply their own pads, diapers, baby soap, etc. Moms obviously get food as they are patients, but they just get the standard OB diet, unless they have dietary restrictions. We do crib cards, but no gift bags or special dinners, and nothing for daddy, as he's not a patient.

we give them a tote bag with our unit name/logo on it, a water bottle (again with our unit name/logo on it). They get a story book for the babe and a Halo Sleep Sack swaddler.
oh and we make crib cards too...some of our staff are good at scrap booking :-)

Our parents get a special dinner with a choice of entrees, a special dessert, and sparkling grape juice or a family pizza meal. We have volunteers that knit hats for the babies. We also give the wee ones a Halo sleeper. And we still pass out the gift bags.
We added the family pizza option (feeds four adults) not too long ago, and this is really nice if there are other kids who want to come and see mom and the new baby.
We get lots of good feedback about the special dinners, and most patients say the food is pretty good. It's a little thing that apparently means a lot.

Steak or grilled fish dinner, water mug with Women & Children's Logo, diaper bag, baby hat with quilt or blanket, blanket with baby footprints added at delivery, and still pass out the gift bags. For BF moms, we give packs with lansinoh, medela steam bags, ebm storage bags and bottles, nursing pads, and a book on breastfeeding written by our hospital's IBCLCs.
Holiday babies receive additional holiday bibs, hats, blankets, and boy/girl gift.

We have a little gift bag that has a few small things in it, but that is it. We aren't allowed to do anything to the crib cards as our moms take it to WIC and the offices around here won't take it if it has a bunch of stuff on it besides the stats. We asked about the Sleep Sacks and they told us no. Working for a county hospital sucks sometimes.

We've just started a "room service" program for our moms on Mother/Baby because the hospital's obsession this year is patient satisfaction and since OB accounts for about 20% of the discharges in the whole hospital, we're always scrutinized for our HCAPS scores. Basically they hired special chefs to prepare all the meals for our moms (the rest of the hospital does not get this program) that they call a number to order and then call to have their tray picked up. They piloted the program on us nurses the week before, and it was amazing! The menu is super extensive, you can get so many different items at each meal, and it comes on a special, fancy tray with REAL silverware and a cloth napkin. I'm talking beef short ribs in a red wine sauce, cheesecake, you name it. Best of all, the food was actually great. I think it'll be a big boost to our satisfaction score and will help distract them from the tiny, cramped semi-private rooms and shared bathrooms (which is the biggest complaint patients write about on their surveys, and of course something we can't control until the hospital is completely renovated).

We just started giving out these little (maybe 4-6 servings) of locally made cakes. Cost to the hospital is reported to be $22 per cake. I think they can spend the money more wisely by investing in a good catering/food service that is available 24/7 for the new moms/dads. The biggest complaint is the lack of food after 7pm (our food service stops at that time), and it's just regular old hospital food. Our hospital cafeteria also closes at 7pm (6pm on weekends!!) so there is no other alternative for in house food service for moms that deliver on 2nd/3rd shift.

Wow I guess I didn't realize how lucky our moms are. They get a "celebration meal" for two that includes steak or chicken or other "gourmet" entrees as well as sides, salad, cake, and a bottle of sparkling apple juice. They also are able to choose either a new (pretty basic but still very nice) car seat or Vera Bradley diaper bag (in the mom's choice of like 10 different prints). Either choice also comes with a Halo sleep sack and little giftbag with shampoo, lotion, and body wash for mom. We still do the formula gift sets as well. Oh and I forgot to mention that we have scrapbook paper that we put foot prints on at delivery and then the nursery nurse usually writes in fancy writing birth "stats". They are then laminated and magnets are put on the back for a cute refrigerator magnet. Now that I write it all out that sure is a lot of stuff for having a baby. No wonder our patients keep having babies lol

I got a similac cooling bag with a can of powdered formula, a DVD, washcloth and a couple of parenting magazines. No special food, food was cold and nasty so we had to order out. Luckily, I was overjoyed with my new bundle of joy that I really didn't care that much...
