i worked in california as an rn & i was only required to show my RN-license, ss# & my green card.i took up my nursing in the philippines & did not take CGFNS or any english exam coz i was family petitioned.

hello.yes i would also like to know if US hospitals are looking for a CGFNS certification for employment purposes. I too am a foreign graduate and am planning to take the NCLEX exam and hopefully skip the entire CGFNS process if it's no longer needed. Thanks

yes, I have the same thoughts as yours

No, they don´t want you to have the CGFNS certificate. The important one to have is a passing score on NCLEX. Taking CGFNS is a waste of time and money if the BON doesn´t require it (CA BON does not).

Suzanne does not recommend California for the initial license (long wait for ATT and a painful long wait for the result of your NCLEX).

English exams (TOEFL or IELTS) are a requirement for the VisaScreen (if your GC petition is RN based) and possible from some hospitals.

The only thing they were intrested in when I started talking to hospitals in California were if I had an american license!

Please read the primer in the international forum for more information. Suzanne (and others) have lots and lots of helpful information there.

American hospitals could care less about the CGFNS exam, it does not give you a license. They want to see that you have passed the NCLEX-RN exam.

Many will do an interiew with you, even by phone to check your English skills; that is the next thing that is extremely important to them. If skills are not good, even if you graduated top in your class, etc., no job offer will be given. Many issues have come up lately with English skills and they are really looking at this.

Hope that this helps.
