Distance Learning Graduates/Alumni - Employment After Graduation

Published

Specializes in Pediatrics, ICU, ED.

Hi!

I have a few questions for the graduates/almuni of Distance Learning Programs (ADN or BSN) regarding employment after graduation:

1. What program/school did you graduate from?

2. Did you have a hard time landing a job after graduation?

3. Did employers question your degree?

4. Did your school offer job placement for distance learners? If so how was this done? (Local representative assisted, etc)

5. Did any of you get into a new graduate program at a hospital.

I just want to get a perspective of what to expect with distance leanring programs anbd whether it differs from traditonal programs in regards to job placement and employment.

Thank you in advance!

An old acquaintance graduated with an ASN from Excelsior College. She was hired at a local hospital in the city she had relocated to. She told me that the lady who interviewed and hired her, was both familiar with EC and praised the program.

Specializes in infection control, peds, home infusion.

1. what program/school did you graduate from? i graduated from excelsior's asn program

2. did you have a hard time landing a job after graduation? not at all, i had job offers prior to graduation

3. did employers question your degree? no, perhaps because i live in new york, and excelsior operates out of albany. here on long island there are quite a few excelsior grads in hospitals.

4. did your school offer job placement for distance learners? if so how was this done? (local representative assisted, etc) this was the only real drawback to the program. the only employment assistance offered at the time i graduated was for the areas surrounding albany.

5. did any of you get into a new graduate program at a hospital. i was oriented as a new graduate nurse to the hospital floor, even though i had been a lpn for 10 years prior. :nurse:

Specializes in Psych, LTC, Acute Care.

1. what program/school did you graduate from? excelsior college adn program

2. did you have a hard time landing a job after graduation? no, had 3 job offers in hospitals.

3. did employers question your degree? no, most hospital managers in nc know about excelsior because some of the lpns have done the program.

4. did your school offer job placement for distance learners? if so how was this done? (local representative assisted, etc) no.

5. did any of you get into a new graduate program at a hospital. yes i did. most big hopsitals won't let you work as a new rn without going through a new grad program. i had been a lpn 2 months before starting ec.

1.EC ADN. Had a BA in another field and an LPN diploma with 2+ years experience.

2.Yes. Massachusetts is a tough area for "new grad RN's".

3.No. The facility that hired me had other nurses who had graduated EC.

4.NO

5.No new grad programs in this area. I was hired into inpatient acute rehab. I had been an LPN in sub-acute rehab. Not much difference in the pt acuity level.
