dispute with NZ nursing council

Published

Hello friends,

I am an OR nurse, working as a theatre scrub nurse.few years ago started with the process of getting registration with New Zealand nursing council, and after 2years of documentation, passing English language test and verifications nursing council invited me to do the 'competency assessment programme'for overseas trained nurses. As per the guide lines I went to NZ did the 8 week long course and passed the programme. As I was awaiting for registration the council notifies me that my educational qualifications are not on par with NZ standards and they can register my only as an 'enrolled nurse'.Due to less job opportunities and not to degrade my career I never followed that path.does any body know I can do anything about this negligent behaviour from the nursing council itself?I spend all my live's savings for travel, accommodation and course fee,for getting depressed myself. The council turned down my requests to re-evaluate and they say their decision is final, but they never consider the precious time I lost and the huge financial hole happened in my life!

Alen, to be honest the NZ nursing council don't care and shouldn't care about the time and financial costs to you. Their role is to protect the public, part of that is requiring all nurses have a common level of basic education, clinical and theoretical hours.

Moved to Nurse Registration forum,

Where did you train as a nurse and to what level? ie ADN, BSN

nurses too forms the part of Public I believe.well the council can't run away from the moral responsibility of making the mistake!nursing is a high morale career, once a nurse makes a mistake its a big issue, the nurse organisations wrong doing to its own fellow beings should be kept under professional silence.welcome to double standards in nursing!

So you're saying its negligent if your educational credentials only meet the qualifications as an enrolled nurse not a registered nurse? Therefore NZNC will only qualify you as an EN in NZ. How is NZNC negligent if your education does not meet the standards of the country?. I'd think it would be the reverse (if you were granted RN status when your credentials met the qualifications of EN then the council would be negligent). The time and finances lost is not a concern of any regulatory body NZ or otherwise.

How come NZ didnt evaluate your education prior to the competency assessment? From a fair registration practice perspective, an education assessment should be done first and the applicant should be informed of the results before the competency assessment is done.
