Disciplinary Action by the Board: Will I get a job?

Published

I recently had my renewal denied for CNA and got disciplinary action by the Board of Nursing for Unprofessional Conduct and Viol of the Nursing Act posted on their site because I tried to renew my CNA license without the adequate CNA hours.

Since that time I have retaken my CNA course through the Community College and will go infront of the board next week to try to have my CNA license reinstated.

Then I would like to go to school to become a LPN. And eventually an RN.

Do you think this will prevent me from getting a job as an LPN. I will have to give a yes answer on the applications stating that I had a prior license denied and there had been prior disciplinary action taken against my CNA license.

I'm just wondering if I am wasting my time by going to school (all the money and time) to get my LPN if no one will hire me.

In the vast majority of states, a CNA does not have a license. CNAs have certificates, and certificates are definitely not licenses. That's why nursing textbooks refer to CNAs and techs as 'unlicensed assistive personnel.'

Some states lump CNAs with Nurses when it comes to "licensing".

Both WA & OR refer to the State issued 'piece of paper' that allows CNAs to work as a license.

For the OP it's going to depend on if her State also does this. When she goes before the Board next month would be a good time to ask for guidance on the question.

Yep, Nevada calls it a CNA license. So, on any app's I will have to say "Yes" for disciplinary action. Just wondering if this will prevent me from ever getting a job once I become an LVN or RN?

I would get an official answer for this question before making a decision. If you do not have to answer "yes", then consider your course of action in pursuing nursing. If you do have to answer "yes", I doubt that I would make the commitment in time and money. It is difficult enough to find employment without the added hindrance. Most employers will not give you the time of day once they find out about the prior disciplinary action.

Thanks! It is so sad because I already completed all the prereq's for nursing school! Oh well, guess I really blew it!
