I think I'm understanding a little now what people are talking about when they say there are so many opportunities in nursing. So say if I worked in L&D for a few years and then decided I wanted to do something new could I go on to apply for a job say in psych nursing or surgical nursing without getting more specialized training? So is what people lending me to believe is that nursing school encompasses all of the aspects of nursing from L/D to surgical to psych and ER nursing? :paw:

Switching between specialties does require further training, and sometimes even certifications. Nursing school does not teach you even half of what you need to know on the job. Yes, nursing offers flexibility and choice but many times specialty areas are not as chronically understaffed as, say, a general medsurg floor.

]My license is on probation for a year after it was suspended due to a DUI. When a background check was done, it was recommended that I work for 500 plus hours without passing any meds. No place will hire me because they would have to pay two nurses to do the one job.
]What other area of nursing would I be able to get into where I could practice as an RN where meds were not involved?
]Right now I'm working in laundry for a hotel. It is very demeaning.
]I would appreciate any ideas. I have just joined. So, I'm not real sure how this works. I'm just throwing it out.
]Thanks, desparate

The only thing I can think of is a doctors office.

Desperate, my last job was a work-at-home telephonic triage job for an insurance company. I didn't even see the clients, let alone touch them. This kind of job could be right up your alley.
