Well, I did not get in the LPN Program this Fall. I will get in in January but that is not what I wanted but we don't always get what we want. Anyways....there is a Phlebotomy Course this summer at the college. I could take that and get some experience. Has anyone else taken this? What is your opinon? At least it would give me a little experience. The only thing is that it is MTWTH from 6pm to 9pm. I have a toddler and that will be tough. I have a wonderful husband and I will be working full-time this summer also. Give me some of you guys thoughts! :)

I would only do it if you want to work as a phlebotomist while waiting for school to start or want to work in health care while going to school. I don't think you should just for experience. I really wanted to do this to but the CC only offers these courses once a year in Sept and Oct. I will have a full load of classes at that time and won't be able to do it, plus it is $600. I can't pay for my prerequisites and that at the same time.

It depends on what type of nursing that you want to go into..............if a physician's office then it can be very beneficial, as well as a clinic setting.
Hospitals usually have a phlebotomy team based in the hospital. If you are in a state which permits LPNs to start IVs, then this would also be very beneficial for you to have.
I believe that the more training that you can get, the better that you can be as a nurse and in helping your patients.

I suggest you not do it only for the experience. Consider all the pros and cons. If you strongly want to do it, then go righ ahead. On the other hand, maybe taking those few months off for a break is a good thing. Enjoy your child and husband now, later you will have lots on your plate. Just my opinion. Whatever you decid is the best choice
Good luck,

Sorry you did not get. Same dilemma here. I also did NOT get accepted for Fall 2005 RN program (with a 4.0 GPA... but that is another story.. BUTTHOLES) and I've been debating a CNA class in the fall thinking at least I could get a job while I wait for the January nursing class to start and I would feel like I was doing SOMETHING. Ultimately though I have three children at home (5, 7 and 9) and I decided that for the time it would take to do the course it really isn't worth it considering that I would finish the CNA class and then start the nursing program a month or two later. So different class but same idea.
If I were you I'd just wait. Waiting is no fun at all (I don't want to either) but if you don't plan to use the phelbotomy then you might just feel like you did a whole bunch of work for nothing! As it stands I totally sympathize with you. AND YES WAITING SUCKS! But for now it's all we can do. I'm going to clean out the closets, play in my garden and with my kiddies all summer and fall and try to relish the last few free months I'll have for a long time!

a couple of my friends that had to repeat a medsurg class the following year (failed by 1/10 of a point) did the phlebotomy thing until classes started, then went in for half a day on weekends. they said they enjoyed it, and when it came time to learn IV's in the lvn program they were teaching the rest of us. So, i guess you could say that it all depends on what you really want to do. Good luck in starting school. i just got my license this week :balloons: :Melody: :balloons: :Melody: so i am trying for the RN transition program next may.
