I had a pt the othet noc with an am bs of 47, confirmed at 52. He has ESRD and is on a low potassium diet. I questioned my preceptor for telling me to give him OJ, but I did give it. What should I have given?

We have available commercial glucose tabs for patients who are conscious, also tubes of glucose gel. Unconscious pts get an IV dextrose bolus. Those with a less restricted diet can get a rare treat of candy, ice cream or soda in a small, regulated portion (going for 15 grams here).
