Hit

  1. If a pt. is being tested for HIT, do you pack the perm cath. with heparin? One nurse told me to and another told me not to pack with heparin. I felt like it would be okay since it was just going in the catheter. I don't think we have a policy . ?

    Thanks in advance.

Heparin-induced thrombocytopenia. No - its not okay to use heparin for the catheter. What if the pt accidentally gets it infused? Our policy is to use Citrate.

No, there maybe leakage from the catheter into the blood system and there is still exposure of the blood to the heparin at the end of the catheter. Better to use either citrate or just saline.
