alcohol swabs - cannulation

  1. Recently read ( on other sites) where FMC has changed (some units) from using 'sterile' 70% isopropyl alcohol to 'non sterile' 70% isopropyl alcohol swabs for cannulation. Packets are labeled either 'sterile' or 'non sterile'

I guess I don't understand the question. Surely you are using something in addition to the alcohol. Alcohol doesn't kill much. I've never seen alcohol labeled "non sterile". I guess the stuff in the bottles could come under that category.

We just use alcoholic chlorhexidine 70% from bottles. I have never seen an infected fistula from lack of application of this prep.
