Diabetics and Insulin

by JohnIsB (New) New

I have simulations next week and one of the scenarios will involve a patient with diabetes.

If I walk into the room and the patient is hyperglycemic as evidenced by sx and glucose level, do I have to wait for their meals to be at the bedside or can I just give the insulin and reassess 15 minutes later?

It will not be a long acting insulin.

I would expect that a PRN order is in place for insulin to be given if the pt is hyperglycemia. Assuming that a PRN order is in place, I'd administer it.

If there's no PRN order, I'd contact the MD and explain the situation using SBAR and expect an order to give insulin.

I'm not sure if this helps you with a sim lab, though. This is what I'd do in real life as a nurse.
