DEA Number in new state

Published

Does anyone know if my DEA number will change if I leave my practice in NJ and start practicing in in PA (or any move to a new state, for that matter)?

Also, from my reading, it appears Pennsylvania does not require a separate license for prescribing controlled substances. (My home state, NJ, DOES require such a separate license.) Did I read that correctly? If so, I'm assuming the DEA will only be interested in my having prescriptive authority in Pennsylvania, with a collaborative agreement that states I will be prescribing CDS (with the attendant restrictions). In other words, the DEA won't be asking for a separate Pennsylvania CDS license number. Yes?

There are times when having 50 different jurisdictions (51, if you count DC) is real pain.

DEA registration isn't really a license to do anything. They govern controlled drugs, so the registration is merely a way to track/regulate controls, i.e. a registered person/entity may possess, distribute, prescribe, dispense such agents. Institutions have DEA registrations, and there are different levels of privilege. A lot of law enforcement K-9 handlers have a DEA registration so that they may retain and possess such agents as schedule I's to train their furry partners.

To answer your question, you should apply for a new DEA provider number or have your current one moved to the new site/state you will be working for.

[h=3]Question: What happens if a practitioner/physician relocates his/her business?[/h]

Answer:
A practitioner who moves to a new physical location must request a modification of registration. A modification is handled in the same manner as a new application and must be approved by DEA. A modification of registration can be requested online at
DEA Office of Diversion Control
or by writing to the local DEA Registration Program Specialist responsible for the area in which the new office is located. If the change of address involves a change in the state, the proper state issued license and, if applicable, state controlled substances registration must be obtained prior to the request to DEA for an address change. If the modification is approved, DEA will issue a new certificate of registration. The registrant should maintain the new certificate with the old certificate until expiration.
