Hi guys,
Just found this website, and since I just finished all my nursing prerequisites this last semester, I'm now stressing about whether or not I can make it into the CSULB nursing program. I'm planning on applying in spring 2012, as long as they continue to allow transfer students...which they better, or I'm going to be disappointed about my vote for our current governor. I had a couple of questions about the admissions procedures/requirements.
My first question is about how they calculate the GE GPA. My CSU GE written communication was covered by the English AP test that I took in 11th grade. How will they calculate my GPA when I haven't technically taken an English class in college? Will they use the grade I got from high school?
For my GE classes, my grades are as follows, with their respective GPA points next to them:
Oral Communication- A(4.0)
Critical Thinking- A(4.0)
Quantitative Reasoning- A-(3.75)
Written Communication- AP (B in high school)(3.0)
So if they use my high school grade, my GE GPA would be 3.6875 (I think, I'm not sure if an A- is exactly 3.75)
My science GPA is a 4.0.
My overall TEAS Version 5 score was 89.3% and my math was 90%.
So, based on what I've read on how to calculate the points it would be as follows....
Science - 4.0/4.0 x 4 = 4 points
Gen Ed - 3.6875/4.0 x 2 = 1.84375 points
Overall TEAS - .893 x 2 = 1.786 points
Math TEAS - .900 x 2 = 1.800 points
Total points = 9.42975 (do they round up?) if so 9.43
My MAIN question is, if they do in fact use my high school AP class grade to calculate my GE GPA, do you guys think it's worth it to take an English summer school course so I have an A instead of a B? Is 9.43 competitive for the CSULB nursing school? Would it be more beneficial to try and retake the TEAS and get a better score on that, rather than take an English course over summer?
Thanks a lot for any input! And I apologize for the length, my mind is racing at the moment. I thought the stress was supposed to STOP after my prerequisites were done

That's exactly right. They use your HS AP grade. If your grades for the two semesters differ, they will take the higher of the two grades. 9.43 is a very competitive score. I don't think you need to take another English course or retake the TEAS.

Are you applying to enter spring 2012 or the enter fall 2012
I am willing to bet some big bucks that they won't let spring transfers in
I'm planning on applying for Spring 2012. As of right now, there has been nothing saying that transfer applicants cannot apply. They took transfers in Spring 2011...of course the budget just got hacked even more. No offense, but I hope you lose that bet, because I definitely have no interest in waiting till Fall 2012 to start. That would mean a year of doing nothing but waiting...unless I got into a CC.
Well I too hope I lose that bet as well but with the .5 billion (if we are lucky) to 2 billion cut they will definitely not be accepting spring transfers.
You can also look into other BSN programs too. Don't put your eggs in one basket.
Apply to ADN programs too, I mean you may get a job but just because get your BSN for a great school like CSULB, that doesn't guarantee a job whatsoever! (i know a couple of people from as far back 09 that don't have jobs, graduates from CSULB ironically.)
Good luck
