Crohn's and other health problems and getting into school

Published

This is my 3rd time applying to college for nursing. I think I may get in this time but I wanted to know if having Crohn's and previous bouts of cancer will prevent me from being accepted. I know I have to have a physical exam done. Is it possible to be turned down because of this? I haven't asked anyone at the college because I don't want to tell them if I don't have to. Thank you for your input.

Unless something actually impacts your ability to do your job (or study, in this case), I don't see why it's any of their business what illnesses you have. Besides, denying you entry because of previous cancer history is discrimination, no? I don't see why it would be a problem. I think the physical is to make sure you're in good enough condition to be a nurse, like, can you hear and see well? Do you have good reaction time? That sort of thing.

The only reason why it might be a factor is if it causes you to be disabled in some way to limit your clinical hours. Aside from that, there would be no reason.

The physical exam I had was not very extensive at all. Basically, I just had a doctor take my vitals and sign the paper, although I'm not sure how extensive yours will be. I would suggest just to look at the form that needs to be signed, read it, and go from there. Ask your doctor about it maybe. If you don't like what doctor #1 puts on the form, go and see a different doctor.
