CRNA Benefits?

Published

I have noticed that most job postings list salaries as "excluding benefits". I have heard that the benefits can be substantial but what does that mean? What kind of benefits do CRNAs enjoy? Just curious.

This is by no means an all inclusive list, but a few things one needs to consider:

1. (i.e. malpractice) depending on years in practice that can range from $1500 starting out to ~$10,000 (or more) for a 'mature' policy. Get named in a lawsuit? Goes up exponentially. And I mean named, not prosecuted.

2. health insurance. individual policy, relatively healthy, few, if any health problems, $300/month+/-. Got family? Pay lots more. Around the $500-600/month range. These are guesstimates based on recent encounters with the insurance industry.

3. Dental insurance. Anywhere from $10-50/month depending on coverage. Got family? Pay more.

4. Disability insurance. That's a tough one to put a figure on. If you have a group policy the employer pays for, the premiums are low but so will the payout be if you ever need to use it. Have your own policy, premiums can be anywhere from $100-$300/month (remember, these are guesstimates, CONSULT an RELIABLE insurance provider for accurate costs for your individual situation!).

5. Retirement plans. This is a huge category that I do not have the expertise nor the ability to condense the options into a posting here. When you are at the point to make these decisions, consult a RELIABLE financial consultant to ensure you are making the best decisions based on YOUR PARTICULAR situation. Do not listen to what your buddy suggested you do. Your situation may be entirely different and so will be the investing consequences.

6. Other things that cannot be easily price tagged:

call time, call pay, call back pay, travel time/distance reimbursement

freedom of scheduling

weekend rotations either via call or scheduling...get the straight answers before signing a contract

educational opportunities...monies available? time off? opportunities available within the facility?

Depending on the employment situation these factors will change in their priority/importance. If you're rural with another CRNA, you will be on call 182.5 days a year. period. Your partner will also be on call 182.5 days a year. Chance are, income will be substantial and the other considerations will be minimized.

If you are employed in a relatively large group of MDAs/CRNAs, the circumstances are different. Depending on the needs of the group/facility, you may be able to negotiate schedules regarding call &/or daily schedules (8 vs 12 vs 16 vs 24h shifts), areas of expertise (and dislike e.g. peds or neuro). I am not denigrating either of those areas, there are some practictitioners who would rather spend a day in the eye room than do the anesthesia for an AVM! But certainly check out who does what case when. Personally, I would rather do 4 very sick CV cases than spend 6 hours in the eye room...we all have our preferences!!

Bottom line underlining the bottom line is to make sure you and the facility/group you are hiring with are a 'good fit'. This is difficult to discern in an short interview with the chief CRNA, ask to 'hang out' in the lounge and talk with CRNAs on break, be sure to meet others in the department. It's been quite a while since I have been in an interview, some places will have you put on scrubs and go through the ORs, take advantage of this! Listen to the comments by the surgeons, OR nurses, anesthesia techs, scrub techs....

To answer the orginal question regarding salaries listed as excluding benefits...add up the above and subtract that from the salary.

Let's crunch a few hypothetical numbers:

Malpractice insurance $10,000

Health insurance $600 X 12 7,200

Dental ins $50 X 12 600

Disability ins $300 X 12 3600

Retirement acct 15% of $200,000

30,000

Total benefit 51,400

Total income of $200,000 - 51,400 = $148,600

I haven't accounted for Uncle Sam's cut on this....

Wherever you seek employment be sure to compare apples to apples and realize when apples are being compared to bananas ;)

Most importantly, make sure you and the work environment are 'a good fit'. Few bucks less a month may be well worth looking forward to going to work in the morning.

I copied this from gaswork.com....To me, this is one of the best deals I have found yet. I really dont know what a good deal is but I have been looking in this state and this seems to be one of the best all around deals that I have found...anyone see any flaws with this deal??? Most of the jobs I have seen on this site do not allow the CRNA to hardly anything and this job allows almost everything and a bigger salary to boot. Actually one of you may want to apply for this position, I would if I were a CRNA already because my family lives in West Palm and I love the beach and all...it would be the perfect place for me...I hope there are opportunities like this if I ever make it to and through CRNA school...check it out ...........
