bkat 8 s Please help! ICU

Specialties Critical

Published

I am a new ICU nurse, just off orientation, and they just sprung it on me that I will have to take the BKAT 8s in a few days. I am a GOOD nurse and I am always studying anyway, but I have to pass this the first time to keep my job. I work hard, Im safe. I would buy it online but it takes weeks to get to me, which is too late.

Does anyone have a copy to send me?

forever in your debt.

I wouldn't stress over it. It really is just used to evaluate basic ICU knowledge. If you've recently went through an ICU orientation, which probably included ECCO, and classes on topics like basic ECG interpretation, vasoactive meds, vents....you should do just fine. I had to take it when I relocated to WA state after I had been an ICU nurse for a year, and it really was rather basic.

I agree, it really is pretty easy. Don't freak.

No worries hon - most likely they just want to assess your knowledge level so they can provide extra help in any areas that still need some work.

Make sure you know all your normal pressure ranges for hemodynamics/ICP and understand how wedge pressures work and what they signify. Review the principles behind peripheral & central pressures - compensatory mechanisms, etc. Differentiate ARF from ATN - symptoms & management. You need to be able to associate different areas of cardiac ischemia by changes on a 12-lead (II, III, aVF for inferior, etc). Be familar with identification & management of various shock states.

At the end of the day, remember it's a multiple choice... the answer is there somewhere!

Ok. I still think I need a comprehensive source of info to study those things. Does anyone have a personal study sheet they used that they can attach or email to me? Or some source of info I can study from for BKAT? Thanks!

CORRECTION, I NEED BKAT 8, NOT 8S

DOES ANYONE HAVE A PERSONAL STUDY GUIDE

OR A GREAT RESOURCE TO STUDY

OR A BKAT TEST

OR A COMPREHENSIVE LIST OF SPECIFIC THINGS TO MEMORIZE, LIKE VALUES AND SITUATIONS? OR AREAS? THANK YOU.:confused::idea::yeah:

It's a pretty heavily guarded test. I doubt you'll find a copy floating around. Again, if you have just come off of orientation for an ICU, you ought to do just fine. It's a test of basic knowledge.

u can purchase the test for $15..its not that "highly guarded"..i agree its jus the basics.

Nursejojo cheating is not the answer. You need to study, just as I did when I took this exam a few years ago.

Speaking of testing, are hospitals still using that PBDS?
