My husband tells me that one of his co-workers has a daughter who just graduated from nursing school with ADN. The father claims she is starting at a large city hospital on a cardiac unit at $32 an hour. I am kinda suspicious that someone might be fibbing a wee bit.

In my neck of the woods, new grads AND experienced nurses usually start around $18.hr.

Well, you said large city, and a specialized unit. I suppose it is possible, for a per-diem position. But, I would question those wages with benefits.

Yes, I don't really think a new grad could be getting that wage during a preceptorship or new grad orientation. Maybe in an area where the cost of living is really high, and after the nurse is no longer orienting, but on her own AND working per diem!

Depends on where you live. There are actually some facilities in California that are paying that for new grads.
Yes, but does a modest, three bedroom, ranchstyle house go for $250,000. or thereabouts in those areas?

Our per diem (no benefits, etc.) nurses can start out $30.00. So $32 is possible.

yes that is possible. some of the hospitals in boston start in the $30's/hr.
Which one??? :uhoh21: I'm just South of Boston (20 minutes)and haven't seen that price. If they are offering that, it might be worth the horrendous traffic. Local hospitals are offering around $21 for new grads.
I'd love to get $30 when I graduate.

There is a reason any hosp in the USA would pay a new grad that starting wage. WHAT the reason is, she will have to find out...There's no such thing as buy one get one free, you always pay dearly for the fisrt one.
