Cost of health insurance for family

Published

Hi,

I'm trying to figure the finances for anesthesia school. One thing that I really don't have a handle on is the cost of medical insurance while in school. I'm the sole provider for a family of four. Do the schools typically provide access to health insurance, and if they do, are family rates available? Or am I going to have to get a quote from the Blues, etc.?

Thanks.

Check with the univ. that you will be attending, as they all have student medical insurance available. I'm pretty sure you can cover dependents with it too. I am going to TCU and I know I saw a cost for medical insurance on their website so I'm pretty sure that all univ. have it.

I am in the same boat as you, almost. I looked into bc/bs in NC to see the rates for health insurance and it ranged from 200/month to 1000/month. They also provide dental coverage. Now, obviously the monthly premium has to do with how much your deducatables will be and what will be covered. Here in NC a pretty good plan with dental for a family of 4 was about 400-500/month. Check bc/bs out for your state and beware of insurance "brokers" who get paid by selling insurance plans.

My experience with University's and health plans is that they will cover the student but not the family. Your schools may be different.
