Corning community college - no wait list, got in with a 3.4

Published

Hi, I've just been accepted to start the nursing program in fall 2010 and was wondering if anyone went/goes there and has info and advice on the program? :) Also just a heads up for people on waiting lists willing to relocate I applied for the ccc program a month after the deadline with a 3.4 gpa and got in no problem! And I dont have all A's in all my sciences.

I got into the Corning Community College Nursing program a few weeks ago with less than a 3.0 gpa their program for Nursing has no deadline. I was going to apply since last year but I was told by an admissions advisor that they still had like 28 open seats for Fall 2009 and it was the end of May. That scared me because usually Nursing programs are full by the end of the application season. That gave me the impression that there's something wrong with their Nursing program. Not to discourage you but on studentsreview.com someone posted a review about ccc nursing program that said there class started with 120 students and finished with 47. I most likely wont be going to ccc.

i was told by the nursing secretary the deadline was march, but she could have been wrong. i have been doing some research the last few days and found that review as well. im nervous now, that fail rate is outrageous. but of you think about it since they are so much easier on admissions then other schools that would explain why so many people fail out. it makes sense that a nursing program that only lets in students with high gpas would retain more students than one that lets in people that didn’t do as well in their sciences and other pre requisites simply because they won’t be as prepared for the nursing courses. but i looked at their nclex first time passage rate and it was a 95.5 so they must be doing something right. i just don’t understand why it seems every other nursing is near impossible to get into, and have waiting lists when corning has neither.

i was just taking a second look at the review, and the girl listed her own intelligence as “not so bright”………

I looked at their nclex pass rates too and the 95.5% pass rate came from the 2009 exams with 42 out of 44 passing and in 2008 92.3% with 48 out of 52 passing. They never say how many started out in the program only how many passed from the nursing program and took the exam. From what I hear Corning takes 100-120 students every year and to see only an average of 48 students making it out makes you wonder if its worth taking the risk to go there.

Hi Girls., I did not go to Corning but went to Arnot school of nursing in Elmira-- Excellent school - but can tell you it is typical of any nursing school to have that high of drop out / fail rate no matter where you go --good luck no matter where you go

Actually don't let the graduation rate fool you. I go to a four year university that has a very rigorous nursing program but easy acceptance. About 120-150 start and only about 80-90 really graduate. It's not because the program is bad, but the program is very intense and there are a number of measures to weed out the students that aren't fit to make it. Our motto is easy to get in, hard to stay in. I do kinda like it this way because the people that don't get 4.0's in all their pre-reqs get a chance and some do very well, even getting A's and A-'s in their nursing courses and then for those who can't cut it, they either drop out or get failed out. Sometime's the 4.0 students can't handle nursing because some are book smart but can't handle the hands-on work or they realize it's not what they want to do.

I have a 3.6 gpa but I have a C+ in one of my science courses which a lot of nursing programs would consider to be unacceptable. I still consider myself a good student and I think I have what it takes to get through the program. You have a 3.4 and just because you don't have a 4.0 doesn't mean you can't be a great nursing student. It's better than being on a waiting list for 1 or 2 years even when you have what you consider to be a competitive average but not competitive enough because you miss the GPA cutoff by .5

is there an entrance test for this school?

Did they have an entrance test?
