Hi All! I am an RN with MSN/PNP (and 8 years of experience in various pediatric settings)but have been home with 4 children for the last 8 years and no longer feel qualified to practice as a PNP (and not sure I want to anymore). I have a potential opportunity to work as a clinic aid at my kids' school ($12/hour!!) but it would be wonderful for our family's schedule and would likely lead to a RN position in the district when I finish my mandated RN refresher course. We don't have RNs in the schools, just an RN that supervises aids for multiple schools. With 4 small children, I would love the schedule of a school nurse. I'm no good at public speaking so I hope I wouldn't have to do much teaching (health classes?). What do you think? Would I love this job? Are there any opportunities for APNs in school nursing? Thanks for your thoughts!

It could get sticky in regard to how you would "practice" since you're being paid as an aid but certainly something you could get clarified according to what state you're in. Otherwise if you can swallow the salary, I recommend you give it a try. These types of jobs don't come along very often; especially at schools where your kids attend. Don't worry about the public speaking; since you have 4 kids you already have that role down.

Love the schedule, and the kids are so funny...
Honestly, I came from a hospital nursing background. I have never felt as appreciated as I do now! You get to know the kids and their families very well, and you care about them as they do you. Kind of like a family.
The pay stinks but truthfully, that is the only negative for me.
