Considering moving to St. Petersburg

I currently live in Miami, FL and am considering a move to St. Pete by this fall. I am a relatively new NICU RN (one year exp) and looking to work in a hospital with a great NICU. DH and I are trying to decide on which area to live in. Can anyone please provide suggestions/feedback? Also, any info about St. Pete/Tampa living is appreciated (pros/cons). I've never visited St. Pete but we are planning a trip for next month. Please help! We are looking for a nice place to raise a family and be relatively close to Tampa for job opportunites for hubby (graphic designer).

If anyone has any information about good hospitals with a NICU, it would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!!:)

In St. Petersburg, you'd want to look into All Children's Hospital which is downtown and has the only major NICU in the area. Your pay might be slightly less because So. FL is the best paid region in the state.

Depending on where he works in Tampa the commute between Tampa and St. Pete can be a rough one 30-45 minutes through some heavy traffic.

I agree with Tweety, there are other NICU's in the Tampa/St. Pete area but All Childrens has a huge NICU. I did my pediatric clinicals there when in nursing school, and I believe the NICU has over sixty beds in one unit. They also had other areas for overflow on one of the floors. They get children from all over the US and from other parts of the world. I saw things I thought I would never see. I know they just raised their starting pay for new grads because some fellow students are in the Versant program, so your pay will probably be better. All Childrens is in St. Pete and in Tampa you have St. Joseph's Children hospital and Tampa General hospital will be opening a new and Large NICU soon.

I wish I could move!!

that is awesome that you are able to make a move. Unfortunately, I am stuck in miami for a while

i am planning (when i graduate) to move from orlando to the west coast also, am looking into st pete/tampa dunedin.... even Bradenton...!!!

I grew up in Tampa.....you couldn't pay me to move back. When I was a kid the beaches down there around Clearwater were open to the roads, really beautiful. Now it's all touristy and huge seawalls everywhere. You have to pay outrageous amounts of money to park just to go to the beach. It aggravates me too much. And there are sooooooo many people. I like to move move move so the traffic irritates me. LOL

Hello, IampattyRN... Making a move is quite difficult right now, but it must be done! I can't stand Miami for much longer! Why can't you move if you don't like it here? C'mon, let's all get the heck out of here! This place isn't what it used to be.

I wish I could move, but my husband and I have all our family here, and he is the caretaker for his elderly parents- My mom is here and she helps me out with my toddler when I work at nights & sleep during the days. (and I am her only daughter) So moving is definitely not an option for us- although I wish it was!

oh yeah, and we have a house here too- in a place that is difficult to sell- our neighbor has had his house up for sale for a little over a year!! plus not to mention that the prices are up to the room- here the townhouses are going for $350K 3b/2 1/2 baths and 1 car garage- they are nice- but as you know the salaries aren't increasing like every other expense!

I've never been to tampa or st petersburg, but I love love love the pictures of Tampa university! that place looks beautiful! I always dreamed of going there- but never had the chance.

Maybe one day we will be able to move.

I understand what you mean. The reason for us considering the move to Tampa is that my husband's family is there and they will be able to help with our (hopefully) future kiddies! We also own a condo here and will definitely have a hellacious time trying to sell, but we are looking at leasing or trying a lease-to-own situation. The market is absolutely terrible so we aren't exactly holding our breaths! Good luck to you, hopefully one day you can make your move.:)

Hello marcopolo59. Thanks so much for the info. After reading your post I did some brief research on the Fish Hawk area and it looks beautiful! The next time I'm in Tampa I will definitely check out that area. Thanks again for your help!:D
