Updated info re: new grads in CT?

U.S.A. Connecticut

Published

Hi there! I'm graduating soon and of course will be facing the pretty brutal job market. Any recommendations out there for hospitals in CT that are willing to hire new grads? I will have a BSN, if that helps. Is it worth even considering a move to CT? Thanks for any insight you have! :D

Hi, PavementRN, I just accepted a position at Gaylord. The rate is $28/hr. I was wondering if there was a pay differential for night shift? Also, their 32hrs is full time but I was wondering if they pay you for 40? Thanks

Shift differential is pretty standard for nights and weekends, but I can't answer for specific facilities.

As for hours, you get paid for the hours worked. So if you work 32 hours, you get paid for 32, and if you work 34 because you stayed late because report took more time or you needed to do extra charting, you get paid for 34. Trust me, they are not going to pay you for 8 hours you don't work each week. The FT/PT distinction is for when you become eligible for certain benefits. So, you could work 32 hours and get FT benefits rather than having to work 40 hours for the same benefits. Almost no one is hired at 40 hours because it is very common to run over your time by a little here and a little there, and no hospital wants to pay overtime for you to finish charting. Most FT positions are 32 (4 8-hour shifts) or 36 (3 12-hour shifts).

There are also new grad programs at all of the YNHH sites, New Britain/Bradley, Middlesex, Lawrence and Memorial, John Dempsey/UConn, Backus, St. Vincent's, and I think ECHN has one.

Thank you for the reply.

Is the only way they hire via an RN residency program?

There are new grad programs at YNHH and St. Vincent's but they aren't new nurse residency programs like some of the other hospitals have.

New grads at both YNHH hospitals and SVMC have extended orientations for new grads. But not the indepth specialized residency programs like at some of the other hospitals.

St Vincent's doesn't have a residency program. And maybe Yale does, but the other hospitals involved in YNHH don't all have residency programs. Off hand I know that St Ray's and Bridgeport Hospital don't, Yalen New Haven and Greenwich I'm not sure about. St V, Bridgeport and St Ray's have extended new grad orientations. For those you apply to any postion that interests you and that you qualify for.
