Columbia ETP 2010

Published

Hey Y'all!

I'm getting ready to apply to the Columbia's ETP for 2010. I was just wondering who else was applying and what you were doing to make your application stronger! Also where else are you applying and what do your stats look like (GPA, GRE, experience, etc) ? I'm getting nervous as I start the whole application process and just thought I'd turn to the forums for some support and guidance!

I'm looking forward to sharing the journey with y'all! Hope to hear from you soon! :)

I'm really looking forward to meeting everyone as well... I have 2 kids - does anyone else have children - and how are you planning to juggle school and parenting???

Bah! i'm so bummed I can't go to visit day!! :sniff:

I haven't heard anything about financial aid. I think they said if you submitted FAFSA by 2/15, you'd hear back by 3/1. So anyone on the waitlist will probably have a good chance of hearing back in the first week of March, when people start making decisions based on affordability.

I think it will be very very easy for people to find housing over the summer, because there will be tons of sublets from students. After the summer, I bet people will start forming groups and pairs and renting together. Housing is expensive, but more and more landlords are paying realtor fees for rentals because of the recession. So don't be afraid to negotiate with landlords!

OperaDoula - I don't have kids but I'm not sure how I'm going to be a very good wife over the next year if I do this program. I'm particularly worried about having night clinicals and then classes during the day. It would be bad enough if I was single and could go home and zonk out, but trying to be a good partner after a week of that will be challenging enough. I have so much respect for you for going for it with children.

Hi operadoula et al,

I have 2 girls, 12 and 16. I will probably be one of the older students in the program. We live in NJ and I'll be (gulp!) commuting to Columbia. If some weeks are too intense I may stay with friends or find a very very cheap sublet to crash (I know that is a bit of an oxymoron in NY). As you all start looking for housing in the area if anyone ends up with an extra room that they would want to rent out to me, especially for the summer session, I would be interested.

To all you folks nervous about moving to NY.... Let me assure you that it is an amazingly vibrant and awesome city. It IS different than almost anywhere else in the world. I've traveled all over the world (in my former life I was an archaeologist) and I do understand that it will be hard to leave the California weather. But rest assured.... what NY has to offer will more than make up for that.

Good luck with your decisions. I look forward to meeting those of you who are able to come out in March.

Hi Operadoula,

I've been accepted to Columbia's ETP program (Adult Care), and I do have one son (he just turned 4), so I know it'll be a crazy year.

I'm still not sure if I'll be at Columbia or Johns Hopkins (I've been acepted there too- woo hoo!). I all ready live and work in NYC and my hubby has a job here.... I'm really waiting to see what the finacial aid packages look like.

But, yeah- school + kids = a time management challenge, but you can do it!

Feel free to vent to me any time :-)

Stacy

I know - it seems crazy - but then again, once you've dealt with kids under the age of 5, spending time in a classroom can feel like vacation:)... I live a five minute walk from the school and hope that helps - I am wondering what kind of childcare I'll need to cover the times my kids aren't in school - they are 3 and 6 yrs old - yikes!!!

It's always good to vent... Hope to see you at the orientation!

Also - I am waiting to get my taxes back from my accountant (I asked him to rush it) so that I can put my info from 2009 in my FAFSA - It seemed to me that it was not possible to fill it out without that information - are those of you who already did it so organized that you had all that information from this past year figured out??? Am I missing something?

Operadoula,

No kids yet but hubby and I are thinking of trying during the masters years. I think we are crazy but we'll see what it's like. You and the rest of the folks can give me tips when and if it comes time ;)

Hey Everyone,

I'm excited to begin this journey as well. I'll be pursuing the acute care track. I've filled out the fafsa forms but the thought of assuming so much in student loans is making me lose sleep. I haven't even finished paying off my undergraduate loans! I'm in the new york area as well (queens) and would love to meet up if there is a get together.

operadoula - you can use your previous years taxes as an estimate and then make changes to the fafsa after you resubmit..i just happened to have my taxes done early cuz i need the moola =)

Congrats to everyone.. See ya March 5th!

Hi Everyone,

New to this board and was accepted to the ETP program for the Anesthesia track. I was really excited about the acceptance, but I have a couple of concerns. I'm not sure if anyone else has seen that there's definitely some mixed feelings about Columbia's program on some threads. Is anyone else worried? I am going to try to make it out to students day in March to visit the school and talk to some current students.

What are people thinking about doing for housing? Find a place right away or sublet for the summer to have more time to find a place later?

Anyways, congratulations to everyone!

Hi! Congrads to all of you who got accepted and waitlisted. I know some of you had posted some questions for me that I never got back to. Your welcome to PM me, school's gotten busier so I don't have time for lenghthy explanations anymore.:uhoh3:

Hi everyone!

For those attending Visting Day, where do you all plan to stay? I'm looking for a reasonable (I know it sounds impossible. lol) hotel to stay with my family for the weekend. I don't mind taking the subway to Columbia. However, I'd prefer one close to the sites so my family can easily get around. I would love to hear your suggestions!! Thanks!

Congrats future ETPers! I'm also happy to answer questions. I'm also available for campus tours on Mondays LOL!

For people looking for housing: avoid living somewhere that would require you to take the 1 train to commute. The elevator at 168th street sucks.
