UCD adding new prerequisite

U.S.A. Colorado

Published

I just heard from my lab partner that UCD is adding Chemistry as a prerequiste for their nursing program. I am absolutely livid because I am taking (what I thought was...) my last prerequiste, Microbiology, now. It is not posted on the web site yet but is apparently going to be in effect for the application period which ends Oct.15. Thought I'd pass this on to anyone else who was planning on applying in August and hasn't taken Chemistry. I do not have the time (I work full-time) to pick up another class for the summer .

That seriously blows! I'm so sorry!!!

They "strongly recommended" Chemistry in the past. Chemistry ought to be a prereq for nursing IMHO. It is a prereq for Regis.

It's just that if I hadn't heard through a friend I would never have known about it. It's not posted on their website. It would of been nice to know about 6+ months ago not 2 months before I was planning on applying. Doesn't give you much time to take an additional class... which is why I was letting other possible applicants know.

It is nice of you. :)

I can tell you it is because they really don't care if it makes things inconvenient and harder. They have way more applicants than they know what to do with.

This doesn't surprise me. Metro is adding more pre reqs also. Sometimes I wonder if I'll ever finish, and if I do ever finish, if I'll ever even be accepted. But, I guess all I can do is continue on and try.

It's nice of you to give other prospective applicants a heads-up. The number of applicants has risen greatly last application cycle at CU (and I would guess at pretty much any nursing school) so I am not surprised that they are adding more prerequisite classes. And as somebody who is currently suffering through pharmacology I can tell you that it is very helpful to have had a chemistry course beforehand.

A nursing program in my area added intermediate algebra to their lineup, making a lot of math-phobic students very upset.

I'm not really surprised. I have to take Biochem (along with 3 other classes), which has Gen Chem as a pre-req, for my UNC application.

With the high amount of applicants, CU can easily add additional requirements and still get many people willing to do what it takes.

Sart45 - it's nice of you to share your info, good job!!

I heard that they will be adding chemistry, but they plan to grandfather in applicants that don't have it. I heard that they will post the new requirements after Oct 15th so that the Summer 2011 applicants are required to have it.

Wow. I didn't know this. I am also finishing my prereqs this summer so that I can apply to Regis and CU in August. I was planning on taking Chem this fall (Regis allows you to have 1 science in progress when you apply, as CU used to). I wonder if I will still be able to apply with Chem in progress if they require it for the next app. cycle?

Unfortunately, you HAVE to have the Chem requirement completed before the application deadline. I applied to CU for January 2011 start date, but if I don't get in, I have to wait until June 2011 to apply again since I am taking chemistry this semester...it all kind of sucks, and it takes such a long time since I am only taking a class a semester, since I work two jobs :(
