Hi,
After reading Allnurses.com for the past several months during applications, I finally joined! I wanted to know if anybody else applied to the second degree programs at the College of Mount Saint Vincent, College of New Rochelle and NYU - starting Spring 2010?
I received an acceptance letter from CMSV a few weeks ago (Yiippppeeee!!!!) and am still waiting on CNR and NYU. My plan is to finish the pre-reqs and join the nursing program - regular track. I have a few pre-reqs done from my past BA and a few classes while working in London, UK, for the past two years.
Anybody else? I would love to hear thoughts on these three schools and other people's decision making process.
Any future study buddies out there?
Good luck to all the future NY student-nurses out there!
Cheers,
Alison

I was also accepted to CMSV, still waiting to hear from NYU and LIU though. Are you going to be a second degree student as well?
Hi JPena8 -
Great to hear from you! I will be a second degree student. I have to take a few more pre-reqs though - specifically, nutrition, anatomy and physiology and some schools may make me take developmental psychology (I already took one psych class as an undergrad and it seems it may count at some schools). I graduated in 2003 with my first degree - in anthropology and women's studies.
I called NYU, CNR and LIU (applied there too) Thursday and all the schools said letters will be sent out the first few weeks in November. I think NYU is my top choice. I really do like CNR's philosophy on holistic nursing education and their long history, but I am not sure about the commute! I live in the financial district in Manhattan and think that the subway to Grand Central, then Metro North to New Rochelle will get old fast! Also, I really like that CMSV has a separate school in Manhattan for non-traditional students. All the mixed reviews of LIU -Brooklyn, really have left a bad taste in my mouth about the school.
How about you? Do you have any thoughts on the schools?
Same here. NYU is my top, but CMSV's small classes make it more appealing, I read around that NYU's courses consist of 100+ lecture courses, so that makes me hesitant about it. I also need to complete a few pre-req's I believe Nutrition and BioChem. I have to send in my reply to CMSV by the 15th though, so I hope that I get letters before then...
I know! It is more than a bit frustrating that student the enrollment place holder for CMSV overlaps with NYU and the other schools. Oh well, I think am going to reply the week before due just in case. I would hate to lose my place at CMSV then get rejected from NYU.
I heard the same thing about NYU's class sizes. I friend of mine (resident MD cardiologist) worked with lots of NYU student nurses and said they all liked it and were great nurses. My other friend's Dad was the head pathologist at St. Vincent Hospital for years and said that the nurses coming out of CMSV were always experienced and good at their jobs. None of it makes the decision making any easier....
I hear you.. good luck on your decision, I will keep you posted, if all else fails I will be in CMSV, which I am still excited/scared about.
Hi!
I got into NYU!!!!!! I am going to accept!!! Let me know how things are going for you!
Best of luck!
CONGRATS!!! I still have not heard from NYU yet, I have to have my professors of Micro and A&P2 fill out a mid-semester progress report to fax back to NYU.

Hi All,
I just stumbled upon this post as I was preparing to write something nearly identical.
In short:
I applied to CMSV and NYU for Spring '10, both as a 2nd degree transfer student.
In both cases I would need to take the science pre-reqs (i.e. anatomy, chem, bio)
I will pay for school with loans.
I've been accepted to CMSV but have yet to hear from NYU.
My questions:
- If I get accepted into NYU, is it worth the additional expense?
- Are clinicals similar to internships in that they can lead to potential jobs? (NYU may have better clinical placement??)
- In the acceptance package I received from CMSV, there was a note stating: clinical courses have a wait list and I am not guaranteed to start them Sept '10. If they are full, I will receive priority for Sept '11. This is a deal breaker for me, I want to start and finish asap and I'm not sure what they expect someone to do for the first year. Anyone have any information on this?
Thanks,
Eric
Hey Eric-
I am starting at NYU in January and have 3 pre-reqs to finish (anatomy/physio, nutrition and psychology). I chose NYU and the unbelievable price tag for several reasons:
1. Clinical placements - they have an amazing variety and there is no wait list
2. Reputation in NYC, nationally and globally - they are recognized as a top school
3. Which brings job opportunities!
4. And lastly graduate school possibilities - NYU's own MS program and also it is a great school on graduate applications at other universities
I volunteer at Planned Parenthood here in NYC and work with several nurses who are NYU trained and one who is in the master's program. They all speak highly of the school and professors (also they assure me it is a tough program and that I should expect to work hard).
CMSV is approx. $24,000 for tuition and NYU is approx. $38,000 for tuition. My belief is that NYU's resources (endowment, research facilities, career counseling, medical facilities, clinical opportunities in the city etc..) will be worth the extra cost - in the long run.
Also, since I sent in my deposit - I have had a great experience with the financial aid office, the admissions office, the registrar and the administrative team in the nursing department.
Let me know what you decide. Perhaps we will have some courses together!
I got accepted to NYU as well, the $38000 tuition is for what program? Did you get finaid info with your acceptance package?
Hey JPena8!
I was just trying to respond to your PM but I can't!!! I need a few more posts, I guess! Congrats on NYU!!! I hope you don't mind me addressing some of the things in the message here.
I had already accepted CMSV and paid the deposit when I got my NYU letter. CMSV asked me to hold a spot by Nov. 1 and NYU does not send out letters until after Nov. 1, so I was in a pickle and decided to hold a place at CMSV just to make sure I was definitely going to nursing school! When I got my acceptance from NYU, I sent a formal letter to several people in the admissions office and nursing department withdrawing my place and thanking them for all their help. I don't believe this is a problem (to decline enrollment after the deposit has been sent) - that is why it is non-refundable! They know this will happen. And thus far I have not heard anything from CMSV that would lead me to believe it is a problem.
I received my NYU financial aid package about a week after my acceptance letter. However, I spoke to them about twice that week on the phone and the financial aid office was fantastic. I found them very helpful - and they can look up a great deal of your financial information over the phone. All in all it took less than 3 weeks to get my package and loans all set up (including a Stafford and a private loan with Chase).
The $38,000 tuition estimate is off of a NYU Financial Facts sheet they sent me - and they say this is a "typical budget." However, on the Bursar's website they say the per-term nursing tuition to be this: "Full time students, tuition, 12 to 18 points flat rate, per term $18,293.00." (http://www.nyu.edu/bursar/tuition.fees/rates09/ugnurse.html)
I've registered for courses for Spring term and am super excited to start!!! The packet of information you for course registration and orientation is very helpful.
Cheers and sorry I can't PM you back!!! Good luck with all the decisions and congrats again!!! Let me know if you want my email or anything!
