Hi I am looking into becoming a CNA. I would like to just go to school to become an LPN but where I am currently living (Fort Irwin, CA - Middle of no where!) and I also have a 3 year old that becoming a CNA would work better schedule wise. My husband is currently in the army but will be getting out in a couple years and we want to move back to Colorado where I am from. I am a stay at home mom now but before I became a mom I went to school for medical billing and coding and loved working in the medical field just want something more exciting! I'm looking into CNA so that when my husband does get out I will have experience and be ready to go back to work with a good paying job and then when we get to Colorado I'll have more options to start working on my LPN or RN. If we didn't live so far from the college here at Fort Irwin, I would just go ahead and start my LPN! So frustrating here. But my question is what did you make hourly when you first started out as a CNA?

LTCF in Wisconsin, no experience, started in 2011 at $11.08 per hour with .50 differential for PMs, and .50 for weekends. One step raise so far and am up to $11.49.

It all depends on your state, hospital or facility you work at, experience, etc. No one can tell you for sure what your salary will be other than an HR dept. You could call around and ask or look under websites, although it is very seldom that they would post salaries. Back in 2009, when I first became a CNA and with no prior medical experience, I started at $9.72 on Mother/Baby. I did that for 2 years while on the Surgical Technology Program and now I work in L&D and I'm almost done with pre-reqs and start my nursing classes in the fall. Good luck! Oh! I'm in east central Florida!
Thank you to both! I'm hoping when I'm finish with my CNA my past medical expierence will help me get a foot in the door. I remember how it was when I first started out doing billing and coding to find a job! L&D that is awesome! I would love that job I think that is what really got me interested when I had my daughter! All the nurses were fantastic!

I'm originally from southern CA and have been living in TX for the past 7 years. Anyhow, CNAs at my place of employment start at $11 per hour. This is in a large Texas city.
The CNA wages have been dropping in southern CA due to so many CNAs looking for so few available jobs. Click on the link below to read a discussion about a CNA in southern CA who was offered $8.25 per hour.

I live in Ohio, was offered a job at a nursing home starting at $10.00/hr. I declined, though, because I know I can get better. A second place I'm interviewing with starts CNAs at $11.10/hr. :)

I am in the boston area making 11.00 hr new cna and then I get 1.25 shift differential during the week for 2nd shift and 3.25 on the weekends. Good luck to you! I've been a stay at home mom for 6 years and becoming a CNA was definately the right choice for me and hopefully I'll get into an lpn program in the next year or two.

I'm in northeast TN and work home health for our local med center. It's my first CNA job, fresh out of school. I'm paid $15.05 per visit plus $0.51 for mileage. I average about 6 visits a day, each visit is about 1/2 hour.

I started at 10.25, and I'm up to 12 right now, plus an extra dollar an hour shift differential. I ended up making 15,000 last year (not all at the same rate) just working 24 hours a week. Good enough for me since I'm a nursing student.

I'm in New York. I started with $15.23 on Maternal Newborn and after almost three years I'm at $16.61. Getting your CNA license is a good way to get your foot in the door if you want to continue with nursing.

I got my CNA lic in co and started working right after only making 10$ at an Alzheimer's/dementia unit. We got orders to Georgia and currently here now. I just got hired at a AL/D unit and with experience they are paying me 9.33$. If you don't have experience, this can be in the final decision on what to pay you. CNA new grads are getting paid 8$ so don't move to GA :) Can't wait to go back to CO!!!
