Cna Stna

Published

Ok, I am getting ready to take a 12 day nurse's aid course in Dec., and I have been looking at jobs because I'm going to start applying as soon as I finish the course. What is the difference between a CNA and an STNA?

I have never heard of a STNA. I can tell you that there are MANY terms used for CNAs...such as MST, PCA, PCT, etc....

Specializes in Neuro.

STNA stands for State Tested Nursing Assistant.

The only state that I know of that uses that terminology is Ohio, and that's just been over the past few years, from my knowledge. And judging by your user name, you're a Bengals fan, so you're probably in Ohio. (I still don't get the Who Dey thing... maybe you can teach me.)

There is no difference between an STNA and a CNA aside from the name. I would go ahead and do job searches under both titles because employers may use either/or.

Yes, I am in OH, I guess that would be why I couldn't find anybody talking on here about being an STNA. Thank you for the reply, it really cleared that up.

Just for amusement....from the Bengals message board:

The chant started in 1981, Who They think is going to beat them Bengals. ( Cincinnati was on a roll.they were 7-3 a season after they finished 6-10 and prior two seasons 4-12) When some hollered, "Who They think is going to beat them Bengals" Other fans would reply with "Nobody"

A week or two later. The whole chant started to grow, and the nobody was stretched out to Noooo Boooooooody. Coming from an old car commericial of (Red Frazier Ford ) who was out of business at the time. But had a very popular commercial, Who's going to give you a better deal than Red Frazier? Nooo Boooody.

Following that, the chant put was on a 45 record. Recorded by Cincinnati's WLW weatherman Who's first name was Zip.

From the banks of the Ohio comes that orange and black machine

They're the Cincinnati Bengals The finest ever seen

With stripes upon their helmets and fire in their eyes

They'll take the field they will not yield

They're strong and tough and wise

Who Dey.Who Dey, Who Dey think gonna beat them Bengals

Who Dey, Who Dey, Who Dey think gonna beat them Bengals

Who Dey, Who Dey, Who Dey think gonna beat them Bengals

Who Dey, Who Dey, Who Dey think gonna beat them Bengals

Hear that Bengal growling, mean and angry

See that Bengal prowling, lean and hungry

An offensive brute, run, pass, or boot

And defensively, he's rough errrr tough errrr

Cincinnati Bengals that's the team were gonna cheer to victory

Touchdown Bengals!!

Put some points up on the board and win a game for Cincinnati!

Who Dey, Who Dey, Who Dey think gonna beat them Bengals

Who Dey, Who Dey, Who Dey think gonna beat them Bengals

Who Dey, Who Dey, Who Dey think gonna beat them Bengals

Who Dey, Who Dey, Who Dey think gonna beat them Bengals

Noooooobodyyyyy

When Cincinnati made the playoffs, the Hudepohl beer company jumped on the Who Dey bandwagon with their own version in Hu Dey Beer.

Who they think is going to beat them Bengals. Quickly changed to Who Dey think is gonna beat dem Bengals.

Now you will hear stories of where it started and it wasn't Cincinnati. But I assure you. It came from Cincinnati during November of 1981.

the ohio department of health uses "nurse aide"

may i suggest that you also read "can anyone please help me with a dumb question?"

"quote - i have been looking at jobs because i'm going to start applying as soon as i finish the course. "

do you really want to wait until you finish the course? perhaps you could look around and submit your application before you finish ... read the faqs at the ohio site ... you can work at a ltc facility up to four months before being on the ohio nurse aide registry.

:wink2:

I know this is a very old post but I wanted to respond with correct information in case another person was seeking information and caught this thread. :twocents:

In Ohio, CNA means that you are "certified", meaning that you took the STNA class only and you've finished it.

Per Ohio law you now have two choices:

1. If you want to work and earn money, you have only 4 months from the time of finishing the course (received certificate of completing the class) to the time you MUST take the STNA test to become "certified" as a State Tested Nursing Assistant. Otherwise once 4 months expire you MUST retake that whole STNA course over again in order to be eligible to take the STNA exam.

Note: If you fail the test the first time you get 2 more chances (total of 3) to pass this state exam.

2. The second option is that you don't start working and earning money. Then you have two years before you have to take the STNA exam and become certified.

What some folks get confused is to think that they won't work for 4 months and then work and take the exam. Nope! Can't do that. You have to then wait until you take the exam, pass it, get certified and then go out to work as an STNA.

Also, to maintain your STNA certification you must work at least 8 hours every 2 years in a LONG TERM Care Facility. Of course the law is not stringent at the time of this writing, however it's changed once before and those individuals not working in an LTCF had to stop working as an STNA, retake the course and retake the state test.

So it's best to just work those 8 hours every 2 years, obtain proof from HR that you did this, and keep it in your files just in case the state registry questions your certification.

Hope this helps any new STNA students! :nuke:

From that point to maintain the STNA status, in Ohio, if you want to earn money as an STNA
