No stethoscope required?!?!?!?!?!

Nursing Students CNA/MA

I was just double checking everything I'm going to need for my clinicals so I can start buying it and to my demise, I found out that a stethoscope is not required! Is this typical? I'm thinking, if they are wanting me to take vitals, I'm sure as heck not going to put my ear to their chest! :smackingf

Thanks for the replies. I guess I'll find out on Tuesday when I start my classes. I hope they don't have community scopes. Yuck!! I was just worried because one of our checkoffs is to do manual bp.

I think I'll buy one anyway. I'm going to be entering my RN classes soon and know I will need it there.

You could be using a Dynomap (automatic BP machine, no stethascope required), or it could be like my program where they tell you on the first day to go out and buy one.

We didn't need one for our class. They had some for us to use, as well as alcohol wipes to clean them before use if we wanted. Some students had their own and brought them along on the day we tested on BP, but it wasn't required. Working as a CNA in LTC, I've never taken vitals. They're only done once a week, so the nurse usually does them. Sometimes, if there is a CNA that is on light duty, she will do vitals, but generally CNAs don't take vitals where I work.

I needed only a few things for my CNA class:

required book

pen

highlighter

white uniform and shoes (and underwear)

watch with a second hand

Most of the students in my class were prenursing students and none of us thought about buying a stethoscope for the class. I think I only used it twice during my class and never during clinicals.

I would recommend buying an inexpensive stethoscope and BP cuff just for practice at home, if you have the money for them. Taking BP was one thing I really worried about during my state test.

Have fun.

I started my CNA course this week and the requirement is a stethoscope optional bp cuff. We also needed the text book, pen, white shoes and uniform (but was told orientation that the clinical site said we can wear any scrubs as long as it wasn't like kid like ie. sponge bob, winnie the pooh), and watch with second hand.
