Frustrated with (former?) boss!

Background: I am a college student who goes to university out of state. I go home over Christmas and summer vacation. When I started at this nursing home (9/2011) I let my boss know I'd be going back and forth and she agreed to work around that schedule.

And she has, up til now. We are always short. Last semester it was so bad I was working a 2-aide, 18 resident hall by myself EVERY weekend.

I called her Monday to let her know my school schedule this semester, and when I'd be home. She already has the schedule written out til the middle of February, which was fine. It's my own fault I didn't call her sooner. But she said "oh, when you left it made us so short that I had to hire a bunch of new people so I don't know if I can give you your hours back." Mind you I have had the same schedule for over a year now. Also, why is she blaming the entirety of the facility being short solely on me?! Ugh. She said she'd check the schedule and call me back.

She never called so I called her today and she said she couldn't give me any hours. Ok. So I text a couple coworkers - the facility is working short still and there are a bunch of uncovered shifts - my boss is lying to me. I don't get it. I am one of the best aides she has, albeit that I'm not there for 4 months out of the year. I'm sooo frustrated right now. I'm basically out of a job but not officially. Not sure if I should just quit or wait and see if she comes around.

A tiny part of me is relieved to not work there anymore, I just always figured I'd have a job lined up first.

Holy cow, what a painfully awkward position for you to be in. It's very irresponsible of her to refuse you your hours because she's annoyed with you when it ultimately affects the residents above all else. I mean, if I were you, I'd look for a different place and tell that woman to take a long walk off a short pier.

Seeing as how you've got experience and are in college, I'm sure many places would love to have you.

That would be so frustrating. I understand managers being frustrated with students, afterall in 2 weeks we are losing 4 more aides(myself included) to school. To top it off, we keep our seniority, so when I am available for work I will be scheduled again, bumping those who are going to be hired now to replace us.

Is there another facility around that would be more willing to hire you so you can still make money while you're home?

The facility I work at at home is great with scheduling college students.

The facility I work at while at school is the one the op is about. I will try to find another job, I just worry about finding another one that will be ok with me leaving all summer long.

I'm sorry you had to deal with that. I would look for another job that clearly has your education in mind. I hope it gets better!
