Hi I just found out today that my friend failed the Skills Test and she took her test in Temple Texas. She was crying on the phone saying that she was a failure but I am getting ready to take my state exam on the 23rd and I'm nervous. Now I don't think I want to take the test now. I'll hold off until I feel like I'm ready. I feel bad for my friend. I encouraged her to study harder and the next time she will pass.Anyways has anyone ever failed their CNa state exam the first time they took the state exam, I would love to know what you did to pass your test. Thanks a lot guys

I can't speak for Texas, but usually a state tester will give you a scenario at the bedside. An instructor usually is the patient. Then you will have to demonstrate proper handwashing, and be able to enter and exit a room doing everything you were taught in class. With 5 random care procedures made into a scenario like bed bath, ROM, assisting to bedside commode, then assisting to fowlers position for feeding, then oral care...which would be placed in the middle of more procedures....

Such as: identifying the patient, introducing yourself, explaining the procedure you are going to do, gathering your supplies, maintining proper body mechanics, properly disposing and placements of linens, using side rails as needed, leaving call light within reach, bed in lowest position, performing a visual safety sweep before leaving the room, thanking your patient when leaving.

Usually the steps will come to students as you are working through the skills. Best wishes, I suggest you and your friend practice on each other.

A few people from my CNA class failed their first go round. Then retook it and passed. They said what kept them from passing the first time was letting their nerves get the best of them.

I think it is really important to remain calm & remember that you just passed a class that trained you to do this! You will be demonstrating your skills on a healthy student which is a lot less intimidating then the first time you helped a patient in clinical and you survived that! :) You will do fine. Take your time - if you forget a step stop say "correction"and complete the step you forgot. Remember the testing instructor was once in your shoes as well. Lastly, try not to psych yourself out - just because your friend didn't pass this time has no bearing on your success. YOU CAN DO IT!

I look forward to a post from you tomorrow saying you passed!

Do not be intimidated by how others do. Practice your skills and watch some youtube videos because it will help. As a matter of fact I would have classmates over as we waited to test and we would watch the videos together. The cool part was that on those videos they sometimes make mistakes and we were able to catch them as we read our skills book. It is a good way of testing how much you know.

Ill be honest, I did fail my CNA skills test the first time. I was so focused on knowing all the hard skills, that I completely messed up on HAND WASHING! Go figure! The worst part of it was that the Skills Tester let me go through ALL 5 skills and then told me I did great on the other skills but.... because I contaminated my hands turning off the faucet with a wet paper towel (I don't know how I did this), she failed me. Needless to say, I made dang sure I did not mess up on hand washing the next time. Good luck just practice your skills and think before you do. Also the above posters gave really great advice.
