CNA to EMT-b before BSN

Published

Hey all, I am a freshman in college pushing through pre-requisites for a BSN program. I am currently working as a CNA for almost a year now. I like geriatrics but I am thinking about taking an EMT basic program over the summer, because I want to work in trauma/ER when i graduate. Will it make me look better for when I apply for nursing school? Or will it make me stand out when I finish nursing school and apply for jobs? Just asking for opinions. Thanks guys.

Some programs may consider health care experience a plus, but it wouldn't have made any difference at all for my program. And the same is true for job-seeking. Some newly graduated RNs are actually told that their LVN experience has no value (which seems a little ridiculous to me!).

I think the stuff I learned helped me more for after I was a nurse than during/getting in to school. Interacting with patients, accurate assessments, triaging and formulating the care in my head all play well to what I do now. Plus if you get paired with a good medic, they can teach you a lot!
