Love it! We didn't have a written policy when I started, so I phone home when I find lice. If parents are wanting to pick up they can, but I let them know that the child is welcome to stay. I don't tell the teachers who has lice. Everyone has survived.

This is pretty much what we will do. Let the parent know, but the child isn’t required to go home like they used to. I know teachers are going to lose their minds. But honestly they don’t go crazy over bed bugs, which aren’t made to go home. Give me lice over bed bugs any day. (FTR: I’d rather have neither).

Bleh I had bed bugs twice in my crappy college apartment. I'm terrified of them.

We had them once. I wanted to burn my house down. Terrified every time we travel now.

Y'all!!! Prepare yourselves. Like seriously, this is going to BLOW. YOUR. MINDS.

Our district now has a live lice can stay policy.

You read that right. Did I just make your day? You're welcome.

After a major win two years ago, the new handbook was released (the old one said there was no nurse, despite me being here for four years) and stated we exclude for lice ? We are only here until June, unless I win the lottery, so I will leave this as is. I really doubt there will be a nurse after us. Our med policy also was wrong. We were never consulted and it was written by an administrator we never ran policy by.

Is your school not budgeting for nurses after this year?

I am here for my son. He graduates June 1. This is in addition to my FT job, which I also am transitioning. After 30 years of night shift, I am getting a "real" job, Mon-Fri, holidays and weekends off, for the first time in my life. Should I win the lottery, I will stay in the school for free, I honestly love this job.

Wow!! ? Father of the year right there!! They are lucky to have you. Too bad they don't know it - or they'd budget and make your job f/t with benefits and permanent.

Thanks, but I think everyone here would make sacrifices for their children. This school is very small and pays the teachers half what the county pays. There really is no budget for a nurse, hence why we buy our own supplies. There are no benefits here for any employee, think of it like a nursing agency, they work here for principal, they don't like the politics of public. Almost everyone has a spouse who carries benefits.

My best complaint of last week came from a 6th grader. "I have a headache, and in class I took my shoes and socks off and rubbed the bottom of my feet together and they burned."

So happy for you! Still nursing, I presume? What kind?

I have learned this week several of our admin do not know what a school nurse does and believe the ones on our district do not do enough, so they are assigning one of our new nurses a class!

I am appalled and floored!!!

Specializes in School Nursing, Ambulatory Care, etc..

that's a hard pass for me.

I think the convo would go like this:

Admin: You are going to teach a class

Me: You mean like teaching hand washing, right?

A: No, you are being assigned a class to teach.

Me: You mean like one afternoon I'm going to talk to 2nd grade about the importance of fruits and veggies, right?

A: No. You will be teaching. For the rest of the year.

Me: (grabs post-it and starts writing) Here's my resignation. I'll clear my desk and leave the keys with you. You are going to enter and verify imms and give meds and check sugars and give insulin and administer meds.
