Clinical experience on resume?

Hello,

I'm applying for a new job and I've only had 1 RN job since graduating from nursing school so should I include my clinical experience?

Most of the resumes I get from new grads have their clinical experience there. Honestly, I skip over that section since everyone has experience in school.I'm more interested in anything else the person may have done. Did you have a different job before you went to nursing school? I used to manage a convenience store. I put that on my first resume'. The person interviewing me told me that kind of job required management skills and customer service skills which can easily translate into what you need to be a successful nurse.Just my opinion. I'm sure many people here will tell you to put everything you can on the resume.Good luck.

Unless you had some really special, unusual clinical experience in school, there's no need or reason to include clinicals on a resume'. As CapeCod noted, healthcare employers are aware of the general clinical experiences that all nursing students have; there's no point in telling them about it. And, if you're going to include school clinical experience on a resume', be very sure that it is clearly indicated that you are talking about student clinical experience and not paid work experience.

I do not know if you are eligible for some new grad programs, but a few new grad programs want you to list clinical experience, especially to see where you precepted.

It does not hurt to put it on there, if HR does not want to read it, they skip over it.

I like to see clinical experience on a resume when I'm reviewing. I want to see which hospitals and other facilities were willing to give students a chance at some experience. One of the questions I ask furing an interview is "How do you feel your nursing program prepared you for the job market?" I get all sorts of answers-I get alot of answers about how the nurses treat students at different places, most of them not favorable. Because I've been around the profession for 36 years and have worked a variety of places, I tend to know people in some of these facilities and I share the feedback with them, for what its worth. I don't ever find out if they actually act upon it, but it would be good to know that places are treating students better because of the feedback they've gotten.

Thanks everybody for the feedback so far. To elaborate, I've been working as a school nurse for the past year-and-a-half and I want to apply forcounty PHN jobs as well as RN jobs at non-profit clinics. Would including my clinical experience from nursing school still be relevant?

If you have RN experience, I don't want to see school stuff on your résumé unless its something that makes you standout as a superior candidate.
