Clinical Experience - Hospital Orientation

Published

Hi -we are working on a hospital orientation program for AD and BSN students as they begin their clincial rotation and would truly appreciate any thought/ideas since we are developing this from scratch.

Also - we are thinking of including some online content in the form of an interactive web page and would be interested to learn of anyone's experiences with a dual type format.

Thanks!! :nurse:

Hi and welcome to the Nursing Educators Forum :balloons: We have our students meet in the classroom on the first day of the semester for a general course overview. It is during this general overview that we pass out clinical orientation schedules (to take place over the next 2 days). We put much planning into these schedules, as a well-organized clinical orientation goes so much smoother. We also pass out the students' clinical schedules during this time. Creating these schedules requires the skill and patience of Job, and resembles a very complicated crossword puzzle in the end :chuckle

We have the class neatly organized into groups with selected faculty members as we visit and orient to the various clinical sites. Students are required to abide by our professional clinical dress code, wear a lab jacket, and school name pin. We are careful to coordinate with the clinical facilities/ units, so they can provide a place onsite for the class, and send their personnel to help with the orientation. Often, this includes the director of nursing or unit nurse manager, personnel director, pharmacist, case manager, and physical plant director. This requires extensive planning weeks (if not months) in advance.

For your convenience, I have attached some modified documents that we use.... :)

hi

Just a quick question, do you have to do day time shift for orientation/precept? or can you pick anything?

I work at one of the two hospitals in our rural area. Together we have about 600 beds. An Educator from each hospital is invited to student orientation once a semester. We tell them what they need to know (parking, dress, what to do if injured) and leave handouts. The students all get to hear at the same time and see us working together. It makes for a positive experience.

We always use day shift, as this is the time when the unit managers and unit nurse educators, etc., are available to help orient the students.

Thanks for the Scavenger Hunt list. I teach a CNA class and I was able to modify this for them. Saved me tons of time. Greatly appreciated!!!
