I do not work at the VA but have friends that do. I hear it is not for everyone, but many people love it there. It also depends the floor you end up on. Pay and benefits at the VA are above average for the area from what I hear. That being said.. apply early. It can take months to hear back from them. Not going to be the most organized process to try to get in there.
Thanks for the reply.
Anyone know about their health insurance compared to UH and CC?
New grad pay? I know CC is starting new grads at 26, which I hear is lowest in the area.
I also have heard VA has great retirement? Can anyone vouch for that?
The VA & Metro both have great insurance and retirement since they're government gigs. Metro is part of the SERS (state employee retirement system) same that teachers are on. UH is 26-27ish for new grads to start. The clinic used to pay the lowest but that changed a few months ago and they've mostly caught up to the rest of the Cleveland market. The shift differential at the Clinic is terrible though, while UH has a great shift diff. Clinic has better insurance than UH. Some say UH is more nurse friendly than the clinic though with lots of nurses running the administration. I work at UH and really like the downtown campus. The clinic has deeper pockets though and will spend more on their IT, equipment, facilities etc. All are good systems to work at in the end though. They have their good floors & their bad floors.
VA has the best benefits and retirement IMO, however each floor is different. Some work 5 8's, 10 4's, 3 12's. VA does have the highest pay in the area followed by UH and Metro. CC is still the lowest, even including shift diff.
I worked at UH as an aide. I like it but their benefits are terrible and their facilities arent as up to date as the clinic's. The above poster is right when they say the clinic has deep pockets.
Ultimately it comes down to what you want to do.
