CLEP test accepted by Excelsior??

Published

:bugeyes::bugeyes::bugeyes:I really feel stupid asking this question but I need to know. I'm 56 and an Excelsior student...just starting. I'm trying to find out more about Clep tests. I understand they cost less. Are they approved as credit for Excelsior? I will have to go to a Pearson testing center to take my tests for Nursing Concepts as far as I know. I finished most all my general ed at city college. I still need A and P, Microbiology, Lifespan and maybe one or two more. Can these be done with a clep test and be accepted by Excelsior?

Any help will be appreciated. Also....are the Clep tests more difficult or is there much of a difference???

New and trying to get the right start.

Whether or not EC will accept the CLEP test depends on the test; the best source for that info is Excelsior -- if you email an advisor, they'll tell you whether or not it works for credit.

There aren't any CLEP tests for A&P or Micro. The CLEP test "Human Growth and Development" is acceptable in place of Lifespan Dev. Psych -- at least, it was five months ago when I took it! Again, it's best to check with EC to get it in writing from the source. :)

All the available CLEP tests are listed here: http://www.collegeboard.com/student/testing/clep/about.html

One more thing: are you really in California? If so, the California BON doesn't recognize Excelsior's degree. If you work for the VA, it's accepted everywhere, but Cali is one of the states that doesn't accept EC RNs.

Thanks for your information. As far as I know (and I'm awaiting a call back from the BON in California) I am still eligable to take the California boards after I finish with Excelsior because I've been continually enrolled since August of 2003 (it was NY Regents then.) The Board's decision to stop accepting graduates from Excelsior was after that date so I'm "grandfathered" in so to speak. I spoke with the boards spokesman from NewYork a little while ago and she insists this is the case. But I'll feel better after speaking with the board here. :) I would be pretty devastated if this was the case because I'm finally at a place in life where this is something I can do. I had enough things happen in my life since I first enrolled, I would be able to write a book! :banghead: But I know we all have those things. I just have to make this my top priority. I've wanted to be an RN since I was 5 years old.:nurse: It's 51 years later. Egads.

Thank you all for continued support and information.

Thanks also for the information about the CLEP. Is the major difference the cost or is it a bit easier than Excelsior's test?

Thanks from Rosie:rolleyes:

Whew! Okay, because in your first post you said, "just starting," so I was a little worried that you'd gotten started with EC for nothing! You should be just fine because you've maintained enrollment since before the cut-off date. :)

The CLEP tests are much less -- I think I paid $80 for Human Growth and Development ($65 to CLEP, $15 test site fee) vs. the $200-whatever for EC's Lifespan Developmental Psych exam.

Good luck!

I'm testimony that you're not too old.

:typingThanks so much for the replies! I'm glad to hear that I can still continue with my Excelsior. I really got in just in time. Now I'm feeling more motivated because I felt like I almost lost my chance. I'll be seeing you all more often as I begin (again) this quest.:nurse::nurse::nurse:I can do it, I can do it , I can do it!:nurse::nurse::nurse:

Thanks for the encouragement....my fellow senior nursing students!
