I posted a few weeks ago re nursing in NZ and apprecite all the advice, positive and negative. I am flying out for 2 week trip and will be meeting a couple of people at different hospitals. One area dh and I are looking at Christchurch and Canterbury area. Any one have any thoughts regarding the hospital down there?
I work ER and I understand they have a busy ER which is what I am looking for.
Any thoughts on the area?
Thanks again

Hi..my sister worked at the ED in christchurch public hospital a couple of years ago. She did not stay too long as she found it to be a very disorganised department, compared to other places she has worked in A&E there seemed to be a lot of staff on the floor but it was a messy atmosphere. Apparently though they were in the process of revamping the department and trying to get it to work more efficiently. She felt the reason it was so busy was not so much the amount of patients but the lack of teamwork and organisation. On a brighter note she did end up working in the ED of Dunedin hospital which she loved.
Christchurch is a lovely quiet city with a fab wildlife park called Willowbank where you can feed the animals, it is great and there is a really nice beach called Taylors mistake which is great for surfing and wave jumping!
Have fun!
I trained in New Zealand in Christchurch and did a couple of my placements as a student in the ED and although it is a great city with nice people I would not recommend the public hospital I also worked there for a few months after working in the Uk for a few years in ED but unfortunately the only ED in Chch is at the public. There are however a couple of 24 hour doctors sugeries that do deal with minor emergencies, nothing big though. If you don't necessarily want to work in ED then I would recommend working at St Georges hospital which is private and lovely. The other option within canterbury is to live and work in Timaru. The public hospital there has an ED (not as big as Chch) but it is a very organised friendly hospital. I would agree with Maddie05, chch public hospital ED is very disorganised and not overly friendly with a lot of politics going on in every department and quite a lot of unhappy staff with quite low morale. NZ though is a wonderful country and i am very proud to be from it!!
Thank you for your info, I know you never really know a place until you chat with someone who has worked there!
Just incase it looks a little weird..I just used my friends login to write a comment when she said someone had asked about Chch, I worked with her sister back home. Thought I should explain as it looks like 2 different comments by the same person! Paula
I was a little confused!!!! LOL,
by the way who does the cheapest internal flights ,do you know?
