I decided to create this thread for anyone applying to Children's Medical Center of Dallas for the July 2016 Nurse Residency Program! Good luck to everyone! If there are any current or past residents that would like to offer any advice, please feel free to do so!!!!! Good luck to everyone applying!
Well, let me clarify. I don't want to say anything bad about the PICUs because they are AMAZING! The CVICU (to me) just seems to always be staffed with happy nurses. PICU often has more travelers and they were in fact very short staffed this past summer. That doesn't make it bad or anything. PICU has a higher census so they are always needing people. CV is more steady. Both are great.... I just think the CVICU is a better place to work.
This is very accurate. PICU staffing is a little tighter than CVICU, they DO get short staffed and try to fill in the gaps with travelers (a year ago they had openings for 10+ travelers at once). CVICU also has more coverage from a PCT angle.
That being said, all the ICUs will be fantastic learning environments. Just depends what you want to learn. :)

Well the manager told me that the TICU floats over to staff the PICU when needed. The PICU just has such a variable census, so I suppose its hard to properly staff. CVICU has a more constant flow of patients, so thats a bit easier, at least thats what I got from the manager. :-)
Hi you private messaged me and I can't private message you back!
Children's is a GREAT place to work. You will love CVICU. I interviewed, however, I was offered a job elsewhere and the money was much much better than what I woulda got at Childrens. So I decided it to take it. Otherwise, I would have stuck with Childrens. I know a ton of nurses who work in both PICUs (C11 and C12). They are amazing people, but this past summer, they were severely short staffed. I am not aware if that has been fixed or not....but that doesn't mean it's bad there. I hope you get it!!!
I was going to post that, since the second interview was more like a meet-and-greet, I can't imagine not getting an offer. I tried looking through past threads, and no one said they did not get an offer after their unit interview. But does anyone know if that's true? I don't want to give myself false hopes, but it just didn't seem like the interview was used to "weed" candidates.
I interviewed with PICU and the ED. The manager of ED said they were interviewing 14 people for 4 spots. For the the PICU, I heard from a friend who heard from a friend who works there that around 40 Interviewed for 6-8 Spots. I'm not sure how accurate the PICU info is, but it seems pretty consistent with what I've heard/read about the other ICUs.
