In Texas, medical assistant can't give child a flu shot.

Interesting. My child gkt her flu shot and vaccines by an MA recently. In fact, the only nurse employed there is a NP and I see her rounding at ghe Childrens hosp I work at several days a week leaving no nurse on duty at the clinic.

Also, recently my child had a double ear infection and was given IM rocephin every other day times three doses. We saw the NP who gave the injection that day. The two following doses her father brought her in since I was at work and the NP was not there so she was seen my one of the two MDs. He ddnt give the injectikn per her father.......so who did?

Interesting.

Even the common street drug addict knows to change syringes between uses!

Now whether they do it is another story.

No excuse for what happened here.

I doubt this seriously, having worked in a homeless clinic several years - MOST of our drug abusers had Hepatitis and we also saw cases of HIV. We had to teach them the seriousness of sharing needles, most of them didnt know the effect, and by then it was too late (Im sure many didnt care also at the time but others, especially the young ones seemed clueless). I am unsure how you got this information, but in my experience this is not the truth.

Oh, wow, the children didn't get the full dose of vaccine, either! So whoever did this didn't even read or check the information about the vaccine.

Less an issue of lack of training' date=' IMO, than simply a stupid, stupid MA.[/quote']

I've properly trained people and they STILL have done things incorrectly-even though they did everything correctly in front of me.

I guess I'd like to think that anybody with a modicum of smarts wouldn't have to be told not share devices between patients. I certainly would've known better prior to going to nursing school and I didn't even work in health care.

Perhaps my expectations of common sense are much too high.

I think your expectations are to high. Working in the ED has show my just how little people know.

This is not the same as the OP, but just an idea how how little some people know: (this comes from a pt I once took care of) "I have pain in my right leg. I also have a headache on the left. I know they are related. I know that your blood vessels change sides of the body in your chest, so when you left head hurts your right leg hurts too. I heard that on Dr. Oz."

Again, has nothing to do with needle/syringe saftey, but gives you and idea about what strange things people (without training) are thinking....or not thinking.

LOL on the Oz.

But seriously, if we are going to agree that the bar is so low for the baseline expectation, then we need to screen those who are administering medications in medical offices and LTC facilities etc. That's one of the benefits of licensing.

It appears that they didn't even have a licensed nurse on staff. I do not know of one.single.solitary. nurse that would not question used, half-filled syringes, in a shoebox marked 2nd dose.

You see how well the MD was able to supervise in this case.......

Evidence wouldn't mean a hill of beans to me if it was MY baby.

I guess in that case, the media should do all the inaccurate and sensational reporting they like.

To hell with facts.

This is why I am anal about my child's doctor visits. I'd rather the staff view me as difficult than for me to regret I wasn't proactive regarding my child. You just never know.

Kids shouldn't get these shots to begin with.

No one should. More vaccine hocus pocus. OK, flame away.

Terrible management and supervision of this MA.

I guess this will devaste the practice financially. Not that it couldn't happen elsewhere, but what parent is going to take their kids back there, for any reason at all?

Not only should the MA be fired, whoever her bosses were should be punished.

I don't really see all that much risk if she didn't aspirate while injecting the first time around, but it all sounds tremendously disturbing.

Huh? What are you saying here?? I know this is getting WAY off the original topic, but what are you talking about...flu shots or vaccines in general?

---initial reaction---

WHAT THE HELL ?????

I initially though from the article's headline that maybe some reinserted a needle into a vaccine vial mistakenly which would have been bad enough but reusing needles on children like drug attics sharing needles. Who are these health-care providers?

---Edit--- After Reading Article

WHAT THE HELL

OK so this was not even some one reusing needle but someone reusing the syringe full of drawn up vaccine but still its basically the same thing and who the hell trained them. Why is it not give a doce throw out the syringe leftover or not. Seriously how is it even sterile at all anymore after being used what fluids only flow one way in this persons mind? AHHHHHHHHHH I hate my life I can't get a job with an RN license and this idiot was given a job.

The facts are that someone screwed up BIG time and put children at risk. Sure, the risk is minute, but it is a risk nonetheless. And that risk was 100% preventable. People should be up in arms about this! I don't find it sensationalized at all. And if it was my child, heads would be rolling.
