childcare and nursing

Published

i have a quick question for those who are working full time. i am a RN and i am not currently working (by choice). i miss nursing and hope to go back someday. my problem is childcare. i want to go back to bedside nursing (working 12 hour shifts) but my husband is a CRNA and works 24 hour shifts and some day shifts. what are childcare arrangements like for those who are working? we have no local family and even if i work days, what do i do with my child at 6am when we would leave for work or after 7 when i finally get off....??

Does the hospital that you are looking to work at have an in house daycare? I am aware that some do and the ones I have seen the hours are 6a till 7p...Good luck

Or you find a very accommodating daycare who will take your child early and would be willing to keep him/her/them late. I'm not being sarcastic, they are few and far between but they do exist. I have one.

Another option is having someone come to your home when you leave for work, wake up, get the kids ready and off to daycare/school and pick them up after, and stay, get them fed etc, til you get home, that way you don;t have to drag the baby/kids out at godforsaken hours and in bad weather, lets them sleep longer and have more routine, I did this with my last kid and it was great because she was able to spend only 9-12 at preschool and come back home, I was only working 8's but that was still a problem as I didn't want her in for a full day

This is when college students are great....fix a good meal (which they rarely get), and basically you are paying them to come over, study, and make sure the house doesn't burn down.

A high school student isn't going to be ideal, unless you can find the daughter of a family friend that doesn't mind her staying late.

I know nurses who's husband's also work shift work. They have a girl from the local college. They're willing to work odd hours for decent pay.

Also..just keep looking. Like another poster said..they're out there..just few and far between. My daycare has taken my children as early as 0430 and I know of kids (not mine) that on occasion she's kept overnight.

Call your family services dept. and ask for a list of lisenced at home daycares. They're usually much more flexible.

I almost resigned from my job because of childcare issues and conflict w/ my husband's work schedule. My boss gave me the option to work Registry. So far it's working well. My husband and I alternate so one of us could always stay with the kids. Good luck to you!

I eventually lost my wonderful careperson who was so flexible since my schedule changed every week, I had her for 7 years, :(, I then tried but couldn't find help, It was great for her since she only lived 2 miles away, had one son in school, so and was a SAHM, and very flex. after perdiem for a few years, that too was irregular and different shifts,( and my husband is always traveling erratically) so now my solution is weekend baylor, set schedule, I'm there in the am, when the bus pulls in, homework, dinner, bed, fieldtrips, school days off, vacations and soon all week during the summer, for now,its a great solution, sometimes you have to experiment a little to see what works for your family
