Chicago jobs

Published

Hi,

I am trying to get a general feel on the job situation for nurses in Chicago. I am moving there shortly, and I have my RN license currently pending for Illinois. I have my BSN, and one year of med/surg experience at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN, and I am wondering if I will be able to find a job very easily in downtown Chicago. I am hoping for one of the university hospitals.

Also, does anyone have any opinions on agency nursing in Chicago? Would that be a good way to see lots of different hospitals and then choose one later for more permanent employment?

Any comments appreciated, thanks!

Few hospitals are hiring experienced or new grads. There seems to be a lot of advertisements out there, but a few of my friends are having a hard time finding full time permanent positions; and they have a couple years of experience.

Agency is a good way to get a feel for hospitals in the area. Healthcare Personnel Inc was an agency I had used as well as Nurses PRN agency; was able to get contract and per diem work, but that was over 3 years ago. The market has changed dramatically. I am now picking up some hours via MSN agency, and seeing how it goes.

IMHO I wouldn't move until you have a job offer, as it is a tough market here.

I do wish you the best of luck!

Hi,

I am from New England and over the past few weeks have applied to all of the major hospitals in the city of Chicago and a bit beyond. I ultimately hope to move there once I have secured a job. I have begun the paperwork to get an IL license.

After doing the usual phone-tag thing, I was able to secure 2 interviews, one at Mt. Sinai and one at Loyola.

I'm quite nervous, and I really hope nothing goes wrong!! I feel very lucky even to have the opportunities to interview.

I know that the general consensus is that the job market is skill kind of rough, but stay positive..... who knows what will happen. With a little persistence and positive thinking, anything is possible!

** Consider reposting this in the Chicago forum/visiting it if you haven't already. I was able to find some good info, at least about the hospitals, hiring patterns etc.

Best of luck, and keep at it!

Hi,

I am a new grad RN with a BSN. I live in Chicago and cannot land a nursing job. I have expanded my job search to include the whole state of IL.

You have an advantage because you have one year under your belt. I have found that there are so many more job openings for people with 1 year of experience compared to those with none.

Good luck!
