Changing specialties...please help!

Looking for any advice for those who may have had a similar experience or any nurse managers who could provide some insight. 

I have always wanted to work in pediatrics and even more so when I completed my clinicals in nursing school. Nowadays, landing an internship, much less in pediatrics (at a children’s hospital) is extremely difficult with how competitive it is/large number of applicants. Fast forward to now, I have almost 3 years experience working with adults in med surg/tele and most recently step-down. 

My hospital does not have a pediatric wing so I’ve Just been applying to a nearby children’s hospital. I’ve submitted several applications but have had no luck getting the job. Not even an interview. I realize peds is a totally different specialty, however I’m starting to feel like I’m stuck in adults. I am a top performer at my job but adults is just not the place for me  

ANY advice on how I can make the move? Resume tips? Should I have PALS? Volunteer? 

I’ve seen similar posts on having good communication skills and brushing up on peds education, which I have already started doing. I should also add that the “residency” jobs are only for new grads which is frustrating.
