CRNA Management Best Practices

Specialties CRNA

Published

Hello All,

I am looking for best practices for managing CRNA's and some specific examples of financial models for CRNA's. Specifically:

  1. Are they on some sort of productivity model and they get paid per case
  2. Are they on the Hospital payroll completely, with the hospital billing for their services and collecting as well
  3. Are they on the physician payroll, with the physician billing and collecting

Does anyone have any websites, online resources, or other information that addresses how CRNA's are managed and employed? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

This is a very complex question, and could be debated from one of several perspectives, with no clear cut answer ever achieved to satisfy all parties.

If you are looking for a widely accepted, universal answer, I don't have anything to offer. If you are willing to dig seriously into the literature in order to develop your own informed opinion, I do know of a couple authors that have written about this. Do a search for Jerry Cromwell or Phil Rutsohn and that should get you started.

Good luck!

I agree with Loisanne about this being a complex question. I would like to know who you are and why you want this information. There are resourses out there, but it would be useful to know what your needs are.

For example, are you talking about a hospital or ambulatory surgery setting? Clearly the value of administering anesthesia has been established by the ASA in their relative value guide. Medicare also uses the ASA model for reimbursement for anesthesia (including CRNA) services. But I am not sure if you are asking from a CRNA perspective or an employers perspective.

The AANA may be a good resource for general information.

There is a book on the AANA website that may be helpful. Sorry can't remember the name. But you won't have to look through too many.
