Is anyone certified in fetal monitering. I know NCC has a course and the place that michelle Murray works for, does anyone know which one is better?

I don't know which one is better... and someone can correct be if I'm wrong but I believe the NCC thing is more of a test of knowledge for certification. I've heard that the Michelle Murray course is wonderful and is very indepth. I have read Michelle Murray's advanced book and it is very good. AWHONN also offers both a basic and an advanced fetal monitoring course. I've taken both of those and thought they were good... but I think that is going to depend on the instructor.

I took the NCC exam in 2004. I thought it was pretty difficult and was a little surprised that I had passed. I was able to borrow a prep book from a friend. It was somewhat helpful. Good luck on the exam which ever one you choose.

I took a basic AWHONN fetal monitoring certification course about two years ago. My unit is also now in the process of certifying everyone, one of our nurses and our nurse educator went through the process to become instructors through AWHONN. This is just the basic fetal monitoring though. I'd like to take Michelle Murray's course soon (it's through http://www.proedcenter.com , if you're looking, mugwump)

Specializes in Nurse Manager, Labor and Delivery.

NCC's fetal monitoring is a certificate of added qualification, it demonstrates competency in fetal monitoring...meaning that you would already have to have knowledge of fetal monitoring, and advanced pathophysiology. Michelle Murray's course is a certification, but not nationally recognized (like NCC impatient OB etc). Her course is WONDERFUL and would highly recommend it. It is comprehensive and spans basic to advanced monitoring, including arrhythmia. There is a test at the end of it. I haven't taken the NCC fetal monitoring test, but do have the impatient OB certification, and it was a challenging test. I am sure the added qualification will be even moreso. I am working on doing that this summer.

Awhonn's courses are also very nice, I have not attended their advanced seminar. I find that their course is dependent on the instructor you get as far as quality goes though.

Good luck in whichever you choose

Just as a side. If you want to take a course with Michelle Murray (she is awesome!!) Just did her seminar on advanced fetal monitoring in Hartford last week. Michelle is going to be taking time off due to a latex type 1 allergy. BUMMER!!! If you can get a chance to see her, do it, you will learn so much. I learn lots every time I see her. You could say I'm a groupie of hers.
