Has anyone used a cell saver during a c-section? Though contraversial, depending on what article you are reading. We are revisiting our policy and I was wondering if anyone had ANY kind of policy for or against using it and where you got EBP for those policies.

We have. It's something that we need to order in advance. We see a lot of JH patients, and if a particular patient has a lot of risk factors, or if her strip looks like it's starting to head south, we will order a cell saver to have in the OR. I don't know if we have a specific policy about it, but I will look the next time I work.

What are the controversies surrounding it? I've never heard that there were controversies.

The risk of amniotic fluid embolism and meconium contamination were the issues we had identified when the policy was initiated, but the filters have changed that idea. Still some articles say to do at your own risk...
