can anyone tell me what kind of half life beta blockers have? both oral and IV!

one of our cardiologists orders metoprolol PO 12.5mg q6h (as opposed to her colleagues ordering 25mg BID)... her reasoning was that the half life was 4-6 hours and in elderly patients the dose should be reduced because of slower metabolism, therefore this regimen would keep them consistently therapeutic. whether or not this is true, i think this type of regimen might be difficult for an elderly person to remember when at home...

They can go home with daily dosing of a sustained release preparation of the drug.
